The movie's neither hopeful in contrived ways, nor hopeless in different contrived ways. Somehow it manages to be wonderful

There are moments in this movie where the great movie it could've been peek out... They're fleeting, here, but they're worth savoring, and they happen often enough to make it worth your while.

this was fun enough if your after a Christmas horror movie,I think this is actually one if not the only movie I'd say could be made better with a sequel (not remake!) I think the idea here is quite good, and everything is well done looks good, might be wrong but it seemed that the makers planned an ending that involved a troll hunter type fight \chase scene but didn't have the budget or time so the actual ending seemed forced and rushed.also I thought the mane kid in it was really annoying, not sure if he was meant to be but he was really bad.

While entertaining, this movie just went completely off the rails in the last third.Story and the atmosphere starts off strong, and it goes strong for a while, in definitely somber horror manner. But then after maybe two thirds, movie and everyone in it just gives up and goes nuts in a boring way. While I'm not going to spoil anything big, I personally found that annoying and very uneven. I see some people found it fun and entertaining, but for me that last third was just "well this is dumb and not good and the it becomes even worse". So it's not bad of a movie for sure, but for me, that last third just killed it because it was just uneven and went to some really stupid places. Places that the director and writer found probably silly and funny but it just felt tacked on and stupid and brought the whole movie down to that one stupid joke with a logo and movie title.

No disrespect to the Hollywood holiday crap, but that kind of masterpiece would have never been made in the US and that's the beauty of European cinema. The moment I saw certificate 15 on a movie with little kid on the poster, supposedly about Christmas, I was intrigued and it delivered from start to finish. You won't find the commercial "Coca Cola" Santa in this and you won't get any heart-warming family crap about Christmas - it is dark, intense and full of emotion piece of art that can only be made outside the US. Of course one should not show it to their 7-8 year olds, but while it is being described as a horror by some, it is more of a thriller type of movie, closer to Orphan than Hostel. The acting is superb and Onni Tommila leads a small but exceptionally committed cast, directed to perfection.

Finnish filmmaker Jalmari Helander takes the beloved character of Santa Claus back to his roots in this dark yet provocative combination of horror, fantasy, comedy, and father-son drama that's definitely enchanting in its own way. Here, Santa is not the jolly fat gift giving man with whom we're all familiar but something more ethereal and unnerving. Helander, also credited as the production designer, gives this film a wonderful look at all times, and takes full advantage of the environment and vistas. There is some damn good atmosphere on display here. The characters here are an amusing bunch, and they're led by the young Onni Tommila in a natural and convincing performance as our child hero Pietari.Pietari lives with a widowed father named Rauno (Jorma Tommila), a reindeer herder. Near their residence, in the Korvatunturi mountains, a dig is being organized - but the man in charge of the dig is looking for something quite unusual. Soon, Rauno catches a man in one of his traps - a man who Pietari believes is *the* Santa Claus of legend. Rauno and his friends Aimo (Tommi Korpela) and Piiparinen (Rauno Juvonen) thinks that maybe they can capitalize on their discovery - but first, there's the little matter of the multitudes of "elves" that have come to rescue their master. If you're looking for something off the beaten path and are sick and tired of cheery and sentimental holiday fare, "Rare Exports" may be something you'll find interesting. It's certainly got a fair bit going for it, with a story that moves steadily along towards a reasonably exciting finale - and a delicious final joke. You'll notice that it runs a mere 83 minutes, so it doesn't go on any longer than it has to. Its music (by Juri and Miska Seppa) is beautiful, and the performances are all appealing. Overall, this is great stuff and comes highly recommended.Eight out of 10.
