I don't have all the words right now but this film is a work of art.
It is not deep, but it is fun to watch. It does have a bit more of an edge to it than other similar films.
The film makes a home in your brain and the only cure is to see it again.
Actress is magnificent and exudes a hypnotic screen presence in this affecting drama.
The DG picked this one, then I ended up watching it by myself. I knew going in it was a chick flick, but w/o her I was able to watch it w/o personal censure. I cried, but it is not a "sad" story. If you like foreign films and listening to foreign languages while watching a movie that gives a peek into another culture, then this is one of the best movies ever made. I will buy this movie on disc for sure. Spoiler: there is no nudity, violence or cursing. There is however, stunning camera work and imagery. O.K. I'm not being long winded enough for a review. Seems I'll have to add to it. Unlike other reviewers who shall not be named, I enjoyed the interactions between the principal character of the movie and the "little sh*t". Everyone knows the world over that little boys are "little sh*ts", and little girls are the ones who do all the work. This is a very deep story. If you didn't get it you are either too stoopid, or too sexist.
If you really love films and you like art, you'll love this movie; if you don't, watch it anyway because it might change your opinion. Visually stunning. A lot of people complain about its tortoise-crawling pace but this film needs to be savored slowly. It's about a mundane life of a servant girl, nothing exciting would really ever happened to her but this allow the cinematography shines and unveils her seemingly boring life under a colorful kaleidoscope. Relax and don't anticipate or think too much, let yourself submerge in the experience entirely. This is indeed a style-over-substance film alright but if style-over-substance is a genre then this is one of its top dogs; no contest.
To say movie is beautiful will be understatement. Movie moves with extreme calmness yet refreshingly different and visually appealing. What impresses most about the movie is, it tells the story of a family girl and how she identifies her in the surroundings, with the family he is living and more importantly with his emotions. Slow pace of the movie helps the calm effect and suddenly takes the viewer by surprise the way story unfolds. The way little girl learns the art of cooking, they way she learns about the secrets of the family is impressive. More importantly hidden desires of the girl shown in the movie is the master stroke of director. Music needs special praise so as acting.Stunningly beautiful!! 8/10
"Cyclo", the film Tran Ahn Hung made following this, his debut, is one of my all-time favorite films. This film isn't bad at all, but nowhere close to that masterpiece. No question Tran Ahn Hung is a very good filmmaker, but this wasn't quite compelling enough. Pretty to look at, but not a whole lot else. Ultimately I think the film is just slightly too subdued for it's own good, and threatens to disappear into it's own poetic reverie. Also, at times the film was distractingly stagey, not surprising considering that it was shot entirely on a set. Particularly problematic were the outdoor scenes, although there weren't very many of them.
