There is, somehow, an interesting story here, as well as some good acting. There are also some good scenes

movie starts and magic startsas the first scene shows up suddenly it will grab your full attention all the lights and shadows are so magically fitted in the scene that you cant even blink during the movie the color gradients of each scene give you exactly the feeling that exist inside the movie and the fear loneliness , temptation , lust and all the feelings are visualized with great use of lights , shadows and colors in one word a cinematic masterpiece and in camera works you see all this great close ups that are really rare in other movies. the actors performance are just marvelous and how it fits in the time period of the movie. the only thing that the movie lacks in is dramatic music that boost the scene up. and with that budget that movie is just great give it a try and you wont regret

Love triangle? Forget it, this is a love square involving famous poet Dylan Thomas (Matthew Rhys), his wife Caitlin (Sienna Miller), his lover and later her friend Vera (Keira Knightley) and an admirer of her, the soldier William (Cillian Murphy). But not necessarily involving all of them together, even though there's the knowledge of all parts that there's something on in between them. And the background of this turbulent relationship is England during World War 2 with the bombs falling over their heads while they "love" and hate each other, and write poems about it. "The Edge of Love" isn't a romantic story of meetings, falling in love and break-ups, it's the upside of those, it's everything else but love. PitifulIt's about selfish characters using the L word to express themselves and make this movie going. Whatever that was it wasn't love. Only William perhaps, he's the only genuine soul in this and the one who got hurt the most. A good lesson to be learned in here. If you're going to get too close, you really must try your best to know the other one. Strange friendship relations are also explored in here. In what world you would imagine a woman making friends with her husband's lover and expecting nothing more to happen? Whatever. William is real while the other folks were just exploiters seeking benefits, money or used as muses in order to "help" the creative genius of a nasty drunk bugger. And what was the point of this, anyway? To prove that friendship can last even after a lot of misunderstandings and betrayals? Gee, how exciting for a motion picture to be developed. Next time, a similar work (but better!) could be made about writer Euclides da Cunha (Google it, please!) and that would make a far more interesting (and even more tragic) piece than this film. The real life, in this particular case, wasn't all that interesting, therefore this is a movie that not even a great screenplay would make it better. Skip this with no regrets and treat yourself with "Bright Star" which is about a real love story, with very meaningful things to say and there's the delightful words of John Keats to leave you marveled. In there, it's life and art combined producing quality material. Here, there's nothing. I know very little of Dylan Thomas and after "The Edge of Love" I'll still know very little of him. Why? Not only does this movie doesn't generate any kind of sympathy for the man (couldn't even care for the actor playing him as well), almost no attributes and it gives so little of the artist (which sounds very limited with his writings) that I simply lost it. I won't search for his books. And that's the worst kind of service a movie can make while making a portrayal of a real figure. As quoted by a famous character in another movie: "He was a genius, a poet and a drunk." I can only agree with the last part.It wasn't that bad. There's a gorgeous cinematography very suitable for the game of appearances all the characters were involved, good costumes and art direction, and Cillian was the best thing in it with this decent guy who falls in love with the wrong person, goes to the war and sees its horrors to later return transformed and with his marriage going downhill, poor and with a kid to raise. I cared for this character, opposed to the poet which not only I hated but couldn't understand what women saw in him. It may be the words but those don't translated so well while echoed in tiring voice overs. It sounds pretentious and lifeless. And it certainly wasn't for the looks, since he was quite ugly and with no expression. Keira and Sienna work best when together sharing their stories and dreams; with the male actors is just embarrassing to look. Still one of the weakest films I've ever seen. 5/10

This film is about a portion of the life of famed English poet Dylan Thomas but, fortunately, it's not really about Thomas. This movie portrays him as a fairly contemptible twit who'd be worth nothing if he didn't have a way with words and if you've seen one tormented artist shaking his fist as the staid strictures of society, you've seen them all. No, The Edge of Love is about two women who orbited around Thomas for a time and they're both more fascinating and more inviting than he could ever be.During the Blitz-era of World War II London, Thomas (Matthew Rhys) was enlisted by his government to write propaganda and in between his adolescent fits of rebellion, he runs into his childhood love. Vera Phillips (Kiera Knightly) was a singer, mostly as entertainment in the subway tunnels converted into bomb shelters under London. While Thomas makes it clear he'd like nothing better than to get Vera back in the sack, he's quickly joined in London by him impertinent wife Caitlin (Sienna Miller) as Vera is relentlessly pursued by a dogged young soldier named William Killick (Cillian Murphy). The Thomases wind up living with Vera, all three of them reveling in the emotional and sexual tangle as a shield against the weight of war as Vera refuses to open up her heart to William for fear of losing him on some faraway battlefield. But when William is called to duty in Greece, Vera marries him only to be left alone and pregnant with his child. Vera moves back to Wales with the Thomases coming along and they wind up living in side by side bungalows. But the threesome that was so sheltering in perilous London grows sickly and twisted in the safe harbor of the countryside. None of them can control themselves and when a shell shocked William returns home yet remains distant from Vera, an act of betrayal leads to an explosion of tragic grief and pain. This film is like a gourmet meal where the main course is the wonderful performances of Kiera Knightley and Sienna Miller with an appetizer of Matthew Rhys and the dessert of Cillian Murphy. It certainly helps that war torn England is an almost endlessly compelling backdrop, but these 4 actors are what fill you up. Rhys is the least of them but only because, with all respect to his performance and the famous man he portrays, we've seen this sort of character over and over again. It's the other three that really make The Edge of Love run. Knightley is superb as a young woman who finds her strength amidst falling Nazi bombs only to see it seep away when she leaves the life of an independent city girl for the supposedly more comforting role of a country wife and mother. This story is really about Vera and Knightley proves up to the task of bearing a greater burden than the others. Not that Miller doesn't carry her own weight and then some. Her Caitlain is a woman of mind and will to equal or surpass her husband, but without his talent and that is the tie that binds them together despite all their personal peccadilloes. The artist needs his true audience and the audience needs her true artist. Murphy also unexpectedly soars playing the most ordinary person of the three and the only one who goes through a truly extraordinary experience to come out changed on the other side. The soldier who could uncomfortably tolerate being the lesser man to Dylan Thomas in London comes back the husband and father who can no longer stand it.Now, as a piece of entertainment, The Edge of Love may start a bit slow and hang around a bit too long and it does a Shakespeare-In-Love-thing where it matches Thomas' poetry to events in his life, which you may find grating or endearing. But if you like skilled actors taking you on a tour of the troubled hearts and minds of people you wish you could've known…this is the movie for you.

i did not expect to enjoy this. in truth i watched it because a friend knew a friend knew a friend who wrote the script but wasn't credited. knowing Dylan thomas, and really being appreciative of his poetry but aware and rather disconcerted by the man, i didn't feel i needed to see a twee adaption of his lame bohemian life laid bare. and this was not it. critical and yet appreciative it was. it made me cry. kiera knightley was superb, even with that slightly strained welsh accent, and it is a sad tale that they tell. Dylan thomas is not the hero as sadly he was not throughout his life and neither really are the so called 'feisty woman' of the pr spiel. it is cillian the william of the movie. a man that leaves the woman he loves to fight a war that they ignore. his challenge to reoonnect with that indifference is what is of real interest to this film and what a beautiful performance from that actor. i thiink this film is underrated because it was marketed so badly. Dylan thomas fans will expect something more from their so very flawed hero and get less, and well that is how it was marketed. it is not a film about Dylan thomas and it is much more interesting for it.
