By the time the dramatic fireworks start popping off, each one feels earned.
All of these films share one commonality, that being a kind of emotional center that humanizes a cast of monsters.
The story, direction, characters, and writing/dialogue is akin to taking a tranquilizer shot to the neck, but everything else was so well done.
The sweeping, epic, love/war story brings the events of the Civil War to life by telling the story of the war through the perspective of two families, one from the North and the other from the South. It highlights key features of both northern and southern society while developing intricacies of the time that we might not have considered. I do fast forward through scenes of cruelty to slaves and war battles, but those are inherent to the time frame and crucial to understanding the difficulties certain groups faced. My family recently visited the Boone Plantation in Charleston (Mont Royal) and the Avenue of Oaks is as beautiful in person as the movie portrayed when the men came home from war.
I saw this miniseries when it first came out and I was 10 years old. Both the lead actors are so handsome and wonderful in their roles. The girls are very good too. I really recommend this series for teaching about the human aspect of the civil war and that it's not so black and white because even though it seems one side was right, it doesn't mean the other side didn't also have some good in them. It's more of a romance than a historical epic, so be aware of that when watching. For good historical content, watch the Ken Burns series about the Civil War. Anyway, this series is romantic sort of like Gone With the Wind for the 80's generation. I'm so glad it's still available for new audiences to get as much joy out of it as I did.
I LOVED North & South! I ordered it in for my husband, thinking he'd like the war and all, but ended up spell-bound myself, and could NOT put the remote down and get off the couch! I laughed and cried as Orry and Madeline were separated and then brought together again, held my breath and hoped the guys on the battlefield would look before they shot, in case it was their brother or friend, rejoiced when they saved each others' live during battles, cried when they were parted... Oh. My. Word. It was amazing! I am soooo sad that there were only 3 in this set. I wish there was more. I wish Orry & Madeline had time to "live happily ever after." I want to watch it all over again...even tho I just finished yesterday! My two problems with North & South were the numerous jumping-into-bed scenes, and the excessive cleavage, which meant my husband & I were not able to enjoy this movie together. But overall...my heart was stolen by this series!
This is the best movie I have ever seen. It has it all tragedy and happiness love and hate. And a deep friendship that not even war can destroy. The most splendid casting I have ever seen. Patrick Swayze and James Read were top grade in this movie. If you see part 1 you will want to see it all. Some of my friends watched part of the movie at my home then went out and bought the movie.I am a civil war buff but this movie got my grandchildren interested in history. Any movie that can get children to learn history is great. I have Books I, II & III and when the girls come up from Florida each year they want to see North & South.
