It's not great by any means, but it's a pretty good movie that didn't leave me filled with regret for investing time in it.
It's a feast for the eyes. But what really makes this dramedy work is the acting.
Junior high is over and Julie Corky (Alexa Vega) is having a sleepover. Popular girl and former best friend Staci Blake (Sara Paxton) declines and is going to a high school dance instead. Her best friend Hannah (Mika Boorem) is moving and won't be attending high school with her. She invites Farrah (Scout Taylor-Compton) and then chubby Yancy (Kallie Flynn Childress) out of pity when Staci's friend Liz (Brie Larson) bullies her. She's infatuated with high school guy Steve Phillips (Sean Faris) but he doesn't know her. Her brother Ren (Sam Huntington) is a college dropout loser. Her mother (Jane Lynch) is out with a friend. Her father (Jeff Garlin) is at the house. Todd won't take Staci to the high school dance and they break up. Security patrolman Sherman (Steve Carell) is a nosy oddball. Staci comes over with a scavenger hunt challenge and Hannah comes up with the stakes of high school first year lunch spot. Russell "SpongeBob" Hayes (Evan Peters) and his 2 friends raid the party but the girls are gone. They followed the girls on their scavenger hunt while Ren covers for everybody. It's a harmless tween girl movie with an unknown Steve Carell providing most of the wacky comedy. It's more at the caliber of a kids TV channel movie. It gets a little yucky going on a fake date with her teacher but it doesn't get worst than that. Alexa PenaVega is a perfectly charming lead and there are some interesting actors both young and old. The movie's biggest fault is that it's hopelessly uninspired. It has a few light chuckles but nothing more.
I love how many actors I like where in this movie, so I just had to watch it through the end. I really like Mika Boorem >best actress out of the girls< (Dawson's Creek/Blue Crush/Carolina/The Patriot), Sam Huntington(Being Human), Sara Paxton (Summerland/The Beautiful Life/Aquamarine/Last House on the Left), Brie Larson (United States of Tara)and of course Summer Glau (Firefly/Angel/The Sarah Connor Chronicles/Dollhouse), who made a small cameo as ticket girl. The movie itself wasn't that impressive. I saw it on TV and recognized Sam Huntington, so I decided to give it a shot despite the bad rating, cuz it was fun to see Sam in his early twenties. There were a few scenes I enjoyed like the Spice Girls dance by the boys, scenes with Sam *obviously*, the mean girls eating near the garbage can, all the scenes with Julie's Dad, the crazy guy showing Sara Paxton's character his coma picture..that's about it. I agree with most reviewers that the movie was full of clichés like the dumb small-town cop, skinny mean blonde foes, etc. This Movie was supposed to be a romantic teen comedy for girls but surprisingly, all the humor in this movie comes from the guys: Sam Huntington (id I mention him before?^^), Julie's Dad, the 3 crazy boys and Steve Carrell as Officer Sherman. So if you like any of these actors, you might wanna check it out, but don't watch it looking for great entertainment..it's not.
sleepover was a cute movie. fun, predictable, funny, and totally unrealistic, but still really cute. obviously she was going to win and get the guy and everything will be hunky dorey (well, her friend did move away in the end, but whatever). i don't think that any of the actors will be winning any awards for this movie anytime soon, but that is to be expected from these kinds of movies. (by the way, i am only rambling on and on is because i can only submit something with ten line, and i am not there yet, but i want to submit my opinion! someone said this movie was downright horrible, and while it's not fabulous, it's definitely not horrible.) all in all, this movie is totally not realistic in any way shape or form, but i think it is still worth seeing.
I've read many of the reviews that everyone's posted for this movie, and I have to say that I do agree with a good number of them. I also found the movie to be very funny.Though the movie captures its target audience the acting was not that good. I was surprised to hear spice playing at the sleepover. It's nice to see that they are still remembered.I have to say that the movie was predictable and it was obvious that julies gang is going to win. As compared to this movie i found Mean Girls to be much better. It is more entertaining and the movie makes sense and is believable while at some point this movie became unbelievable like the part where she is riding on skates and trying to get home before her father finds out that she is gone
