The performances transcend the film's tropes, grounding it in characters that feel more complete than this subgenre often produces.

So, they play this on SyFy, it has the typical cheesy effects and dinosaurs that sound like cougars. Some actually talk, and that is even more awful, because the poor animation never makes eye contact with the humans. The "star" seems to be Wentworth Miller, best known for his work on "Prison Break", and who has one emotion that he caries at all times. If acting can be called "wooden", then Miller is a virtual tree. Some call this film "magical" or "enchanting". Sure, I guess, if you like the idea of dinosaurs co-existing with people. But real dinosaurs would crush or eat people, not talk or create a special society. I had to choose between watching this and "Tremors"... why did I not choose "Tremors"?

Simply a superb 4 hour movie. Excellent cast who are truly believable in their roles. The female leads are so remarkably alike I began to think they were really related. The 2 male leads interact well that they are believable as brothers. The sets are tremendous and are very lifelike, even if much is made of the same set time-after-time (the big ramp). The animatronic Dino's could have a greater range as not many interact with the rest of the cast as I would have liked - I seem to recall a similar premise in another film who's name I cannot recall! - which never worked as well as this one does. As I have it on DVD it is I saw it as a film, but there is plenty of opportunities for pausing within the presentation - probably where ad breaks were and episodes ended. The story is one suitable for both children and adults, and will appeal to all ages, although it can appear a little simplistic at times. This reflects the age group the original book as are aimed at.

maybe it's the original book, but this is so stupid. They live in freaking Waterfall City, and they spend all their time looking for sun stones as a source of power. use the damn waterfalls! create electricity!!! The leading actors are also horrible, especially Wentworth Miller as David, he's acting like he's the director's con who got his first chance in front of a camera. Katie Carr is also laconic and amateur, and only Tyron Leitso does a fair job.The special effects are nice and the CGI character of Zipeau (or Zippo?) is quite lovable. The story is a predictable Disney-esquire adventure for kids, very kitsch, very American and very simplistic. But Dinotopia still keeps some level of interest. It's watchable, if you have 4 extra hours and you can sleep. It will get you to slumber-land, that's for sure.

This miniseries had an interesting premise... But it didn't live up to the hype for one reason alone: The acting was terrible. ABC ran commercials nonstop proclaiming this to be a great success, then when it ran it was painful to watch. The script was full of cheesy lines that you would expect in a bad comic book, and there was almost no believable dialogue at all. The best example of bad acting in this series was the actor who played David. He was the worst in the series. it seemed as if all of the series' budget went into animation and then they hired soap opera actors. The animation was great and the landscapes were beautiful, but the series was just too painful to watch. I saw it twice so I know what I am talking about. I was left feeling very unfulfilled after this.
