Her twin sister Catalina telepathically feels the pain of Agata and hears her whispering for help. Fun premise, good actors, bad writing. This film seemed to have potential at the beginning but it quickly devolves into a trite action film. Ultimately it's very boring.

KM 31: Kilometre 31 is written and directed by Rigoberto Castañeda. It stars Iliana Fox, Carlos Aragón, Adrià Collado, Raúl Méndez and Luisa Huertas. Music is by Carles Cases and cinematography by Alejandro Martínez.Inspired by the Mexican legend of La Llorona (the weeping/crying woman), Rigoberto Castañeda's movie suffers by comparison with the J-horror boom that invigorated many a jaded horror fan over the last two decades. Castañeda was quite vociferous about his film not being influenced by the Asian strand of terror, but it just seems so obvious to pretty much everyone who has reviewed the film it can't be coincidence!Anyway, regardless of influences and denials, KM 31 is a better than average shudder picture, even if it drags itself to an over extended run time and is far too complex for its own good. A shame because the style that Castañeda gives his film is very atmospheric, while there is a strong sense of the mysterious going on.Unfortunately come the second half the narrative just spins off into a baffling vortex of over cleverness, or is it ignorance? Something which is guaranteed to lose a good portion of the audience by the time the spectral apparition makes its play and the conclusion is reached. The early promise is not reached and there's a lack of genuine scares, but there's enough here to stop it being awful; particularly if you haven't seen any J-horror... 6/10

After the death of their mother when they were children, twins Agata and Catalina develop a psychic skill allowing them to communicate over great distances. But Agata falls into a coma after an accident on kilometer 31 and Catalina experiences all her pain.Tormented by Agata's psychic screams for help,Catalina sets out to find what really happened to Agata and finds that her twin has fallen victim of the ancient and terrifying curse of La Llorona, the screaming woman. The main problem of "Km 31" is that the film is heavily americanized.Sure,it utilizes some old-school Mexican folklore tales as the back-story,but the filmmakers just don't do enough with it.The acting is solid, the film is beautifully made and some moments are mildly creepy, but horror fans expecting something gruesome should really give this one a pass.

An intriguing ghost story that keeps you at the edge of your seat.Good direction, the story flows at a very good pace, descent dialogues, very good acting and character development and excellent special effects that compliment the story without feeling overloaded. Tell me, how can this be considered a bad movie?? Sure, it has elements that cannot be consider original, SO WHAT?? as long as they make a good whole (and they certainly do).Predictable?? I had no idea where it was going and was surprised a few times, and the end is very good. Solid ghost story that may not give you nightmares but certainly deserves the ticket price. It has been already a box-office hit in Mexico and there is a reason for that.In my opinion and outstanding achievement by director/writer Rigoberto Castañeda.

I can try to forgive the mistakes of Km 31, but I know I will not forget. Whoever investigates the Mexican cinema just a little, will realize horror genre is not around for, at least, 15 years. This is not an excuse, but let you understand where we are and where are we trying to go. Yes, it is true, Km 31 failed in many aspects. It failed with a captivating closing or with empathic performances, with a rhythm that he never found, with jumping of images packed in good special effects, but surrounded with incomprehensible sequences. But if we are fair, it also had wise moves. It has sowed a seed of confidence and credibility. He has made us remember that our cinema is perfectible and not only condemnable. It reminded us that bogeys not only exist in Tennesse, voodoo in New Orleans or curses in Japan. It reminded us that also here they watch, they threaten and scare. He reminded to us that here also we have fantasy. I am sure that with the correct support, Km 31 can be the beginning of a new history in the cinema of terror. I hope that this way it should be.
