After his father's departure, György gets a job at a brickyard; his bus is stopped and its Jewish occupants sent to camps. There, György find camaraderie, suffering, cruelty, illness, and death. He hears advice on preserving one's dignity and self-esteem. He discovers hatred. If he does survive and returns to Budapest, what will he find? What is natural; what is it to be a Jew? Sepia, black and white, and color alternate to shade the mood.

I wanted to like it more than I actually did... But much of the humor totally escaped me and I walked out only mildly impressed.
If you like to be scared, if you like to laugh, and if you like to learn a thing or two at the movies, this absolutely cannot be missed.
A terrific literary drama and character piece that shows how the process of creating art can be seen differently by those doing it and those looking at it from the outside.
It is a whirlwind of delight --- attractive actors, stunning couture, spectacular sets and outrageous parties. It's a feast for the eyes. But what really makes this dramedy work is the acting.
As a kid, I used to think that some of the thoughts I was having were unique to me. I didn't see any of those things in mass media. But slowly and slowly as I read more and I see more films, that set of things that were unique only to me have been reducing in size. Fateless just destroyed that set. I love movies. They move me, excite and sometimes literally live me breathless. Fateless just shook me up. It struck a chord somewhere deep inside. It revived the memories that I thought I had forgotten, the feelings that I had buried somewhere deep in my psyche. All the credit has to go to Imre Kertész, the writer of the original source as well as the screenplay writer. He has written an account that is so painfully honest and bold that it breaks through all the clichés of depictions of pain and sorrow, not just in literature and film but in life too. After a long time I am just itching to get my hands on a book. Don't know when I will take it up though.
"Fateless" is probably the most episodic holocaust drama I have ever seen. There's just no story structure in here whatsoever, the only thing you can be sure of is that pretty much every scene will end with a fade to black (seriously, what's with that?). The filmmakers do manage to make you care about our protagonist, but they don't really do much with him. A movie like "The Pianist" has an equally compelling lead, but was smart enough to use the character in a coherent plot so it could work to a sensational climax. This movie has its lead lying in a bed, working, eating soup, standing in line: there are no real development in the plot, just a lot of clumsy time jumps. "Fateless" might have the most anti-climactic liberation scene of all time. Suddenly the allies are just there, no transition whatsoever. And putting a grey color filter on everything is such a completely uninspired move, there got to be better ways to capture the horrors of war. Even the Ennio Morricone soundtrack is totally unmemorable, which is something I thought I'd never have to write. "Fateless" is frankly just not my cup of tea.
This film when I saw it, was hyped up to be brilliant and as good as the Pianist, which it was nowhere near, it was wishy washy, without emotions and was hard to engage in the hardships, It needed more gore and was one of the happiest Hollocaust films ever made and portrays the camp as OK and like they were having fun in the beginning.Very un-heartfelt and had a true bad bit of acting by Daniel Craig (who shouldn't have been in it, Hollywoodiseing it.Not one I can recommend, but if you like wishy washy untrue Holocaust films, this is for you. this is due to in the camp them helping him when he is down and out and giving him a nice bed, you cant see the Germans doing this, its was against their ethos.Anyway over the whole i would give it 5.5-6 out of 10.
i think this is a must see movie for all those who have their opinions about the Holocaust n the wars around the world. the director has used very minimalistic movements int he entire movie and has managed to achieve the best form of storytelling . i think the movie is an excellent piece of a Good screenplay and cinematography . this movie truly deserved the awards it got. also since i got the DVD it had a bonus section where the writer (he even wrote the novel ) has many things to say and also says something about Steven Spielberg's 'schindlers list'. well all are entitled to their own opinions but overall the tag line of the movie...you cannot forget remains true a moving experience!
