I wanted to like it more than I actually did... But much of the humor totally escaped me and I walked out only mildly impressed.

The movie's neither hopeful in contrived ways, nor hopeless in different contrived ways. Somehow it manages to be wonderful

All I knew about this film was the leading actress, I was certainly intrigued by the meaning of the title, it was rated pretty low by critics, but I was willing to try it anyway, directed by Griffin Dunne (Practical Magic). Basically Dr. Emmeline "Emma" Lloyd (Uma Thurman, also producing) is a famed love expert with a hit radio show, she has made a career advising listeners with her sensible, mature and responsible approach to relationships. One day, she gets a call from Sophia (Final Destination 2's Justina Machado) who wants advice regarding her insecurities about her upcoming marriage to firefighter Patrick Sullivan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), Emma tells her she should break off the engagement, and she does. Patrick listened to this conversation on the radio and is so upset, then he hears that Emma herself is getting married, Emma is engaged to perfect- gentleman Richard (Colin Firth), Patrick visits his young neighbour Ajay (Jeffrey Tedmori) who has an idea that will help Patrick get his own back. Ajay is a hacker, and is able to hack into the public records and create a fake marriage certificate between Patrick and Emma, Patrick allows this, so when Emma and Richard go the public records office to get a marriage license, Emma is shocked to be told that she is married already to a man she has never met. With the wedding coming up, Emma must now find the mystery "accidental" husband and get an annulment, she tracks down Patrick, he just goes along with the ruse that he knows nothing about this incident either, and he is able to get her away when she gets drunk. Things get more complicated when Emma tries to ask Patrick to sign annulment papers again, and she turns up at an event, with Frau Greta Bollenbecker (Isabella Rossellini) attending, she assumes Emma is his fiancé, Patrick is unable to fess up. With the annulment not finalised, there is much tension between Emma and Patrick, due to their opposite approaches, but slowly Emma starts to admire Patrick for his carefree lifestyle, and she begins to doubt her conservative opinions on life and love. Emma does finally get the annulment papers finalised, and the wedding with Richard is all set to go ahead, but she has grown to have feelings for Patrick, they make love, but then she finds out about what Patrick did to teach her lesson regarding his previous engagement, she is angry and leaves him. It comes to the wedding day, but Emma cannot help but still have feelings for Patrick, even Richard knows that she no longer has the same passion for him as she did previously, they amicably break up. In the end, Emma creates a fire to set off the alarm at the venue, both to get rid of the guests, and to get the fire service, specifically for Patrick to show up, in the end Emma and Patrick embrace their true feelings for each other, and a year later they are married, for real, and she is pregnant with their child. Also starring Sam Shepard as Wilder, Keir Dullea as Mr. Bollenbecker, Justina Machado as Sofia, Sarita Choudhury as Sunny and Lindsay Sloane as Marcy. Thurman both acting and producing tries her best to make something worthwhile, but fails, Dean Morgan is okay, and Firth is just in it for his stiff-upper-lip, it is sort of an original story, but done in a very predictable way, the attempted jokes don't work, and the love story is not completely believable, overall it's a bit of a boring romantic comedy. Adequate!

This movie is an unexpected find. After reading some of the other reviews for this, mostly negative, I wondered what I might be getting myself into in watching it. In fact it is a charming romantic comedy. Yes this kind of thing has been done many times before, but that doesn't mean it can't succeed another time. And this one does succeed. The script is witty and light and the acting is just beautiful, especially Uma Thurman who absolutely sparkles as Emma, who thinks she knows all there is to know about romantic relationships and is about to be married to Richard, played by Colin Firth when Patrick, played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan enters her life claiming that he is her husband, which leads to massive complications in Emma's life.Thurman and Morgan have excellent chemistry and are definitely believable together. And I really loved this movie and would highly recommend it to anybody who wants to see a good old fashioned romantic comedy set in modern day.

This Rom-Com has one or two actually funny moments, but in the end is a rather cynical movie disguised as a romantic comedy. Most of the time it tries too hard to be charming. It fails to do so because of its rather uncharismatic characters. The only charismatic character is Colin Firth's Richard who is mature, patient, and understanding. The message that the writers try to convey about not being perfect is dominated by the message that being a boorish jerk and butting into other people's lives (both main characters do this) results in a happen ending and love. Worse, that a good, true, and honorable man doesn't get the woman he loves, and is completely marginalized, considered boring and stupid, even my the main female character's father.

This movie was written by three women who can't possibly have ever had a single date amongst them. These virgin scribes don't write female characters well or male characters or young people or Caucasians or Indians or parents or children or…well, basically any variation of humanity that appears in this movie bears as much resemblance to actual people as I do to Bo Derek. Celibate monks and nuns who have never seen a member of the opposite sex could come up with a story that more closely mirrors human romance than The Accidental Husband. The entire production and everything in it is so fake and artificial that the entire cast could have been replaced by those little Playskool figures that are just plastic bodies and heads, with all the dialog voiced by really depressed Doberman Pinchers, and it wouldn't have made any difference. And don't think it is only the writing that's horrid. The invincible Britishness of Colin Firth carries him through and Ajay Naidu plays "funny ethnic stereotype" for all he's worth, but Uma Thurman and Jeffrey Dean Morgan are appalling. True, this screenplay requires them to do and say things that no one would ever do or say, but I don't think director Griffin Dunne instructed them to play their characters like they were reincarnated game show hosts from the 1970s. Sam Shepard wanders through the film like he showed up on the set expecting to do the voice over for a car commercial. The rest of the supporting characters might as well be reading off cue cards. The Accidental Husband is about Doctor Emma Lloyd (Uma Thurman), a relationship expert with her own radio show and a new book coming out. After she talks a woman into calling off her marriage to firefighter Patrick Sullivan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), he decides to get even by having an Indian teenage hacker make Emma and Patrick officially married in the computer records of New York State. That interferes with Emma's plans to marry the eternally safe Richard Bratton (Colin Firth) and leads to a string of ever more implausible lies and astonishingly unconvincing scenes of growing attraction between Patrick and Emma.Because this is one of those motion pictures that are so resolutely horrible I could write a review 10,000 words long and still not cover each and every example of how it sucks, I'll just stick to one thing that I believe perfectly embodies how stupendously inept it is. The Accidental Husband is a love story, like many others, about people who discover they're meant to be together and must overcome obstacles in order to unite at the end and live happily ever after. Except at this conclusion where Emma and Richard are joined in love, the last scene of the two has them contentedly separated by a glass wall. They can see and talk to each other, but they can't touch. Now, when a love story ends with the lovers kept apart like that, there should be a point to it. Whether it's thematic or psychological or subtextual or referential, if your love story is going to finish with your lovers standing in a room with a glass wall between them, THERE SHOULD BE SOME SORT OF FRIGGIN' SIGNIFICANCE TO IT. As you may have guessed, there is no significance to such an ending here. It doesn't mean anything except "The people who wrote this film don't know what the bleep they're doing".Unless the most intimate relationship you've ever had in your life was with an inflatable sex doll, avoid watching The Accidental Husband. It's that bad.
