Simple and well acted, it has tension enough to knot the stomach.
It is not deep, but it is fun to watch. It does have a bit more of an edge to it than other similar films.
The story, direction, characters, and writing/dialogue is akin to taking a tranquilizer shot to the neck, but everything else was so well done.
I didn’t really have many expectations going into the movie (good or bad), but I actually really enjoyed it. I really liked the characters and the banter between them.
The film was recommended by a martial arts fan, and in a sense it IS a MA film, but it is so much more.It is a tale of history; of legend; of star-crossed lovers; of ignorant politicians and rulers; of human nature; of sacrifice, of true love; and ultimately of the potential of the human spirit.Great cinematography, acting, direction.I don't know how I missed it when released but I have seen it once and I can honestly say I will never forget it.It is up to individual viewer to decide how much of the Shinobi legend is fact and how much is fiction. Whatever you decide, it will not prevent your enjoyment of the film.Recommended.
I really enjoyed this movie and thought that overall it was really well done. I hate it when they dub movies, so I highly suggest you watch it with subtitles because it is better that way in my opinion. The characters and fight scenes were good. A lot of the characters had interesting powers and you found this out based on who they fought but some of them could have been better I feel. Most of the movie involved the two tribe's fighting each other yet it was still a romantic movie because of the relationship between Oboro and Kouga. It is hard to do that so I give them props. Area's for improvement would have been simply better technology to make the fight scenes more impressive but it was back in 2005 so I can't be too critical of that since a lot of new technology has been recently made. The scenery and setting was beautiful as well. Character development was excellent especially for the two main characters who are in love. You saw how they began to change and think differently as their lives became immersed in a very chaotic world. Great movie, definitely worth seeing!
It is almost hard to rate this movie as it is so close to the mark in many ways. You have here your basic story of Romeo and Juliet, cept done in the ninja version. Star crossed lovers (yes they actually use this analogy several times in the movie which was a tad cliché but w/e maybe it was just the best translation they could find) from the 2 most powerful ninja clans, which also happen to be fierce enemies, end up having to lead their clans in battle against each other as part of the emperors plan to ensure peace in the realm. The good: fantastic shot settings. The backdrops are very pretty. Some of the views such as Gennosuke killing the 3 ninja framed by the moon are pretty cool, while there are a number like the last shot of Oboru drinking from the wintry stream which are very beautiful. The action - Some of it was quite good, most specifically the fight between the 2 shinobi that showcased their skill in the beginning to the emperor. The bad: could have done so much more with the action. The film is called shinobi... You are already taking the story from Basilisk? (I read that it was Basilisk in someone else's review which I watched sometime back, assuming they are correct), so you already know what type of scenes that anime had. Granted it is tough to squeeze even a short series anime into a movie, I just feel there could have been so much more done, or even more with what they already had sequenced. Also, seems to be that everyone seems so enraptured with this as a romantic movie. Emotionally this movie could have been done even better as well. The only strong out of the ordinary part was when she took her eyes to take her own power out. I remember the anime being much more poignant than this film due to being more connected to the characters. Each death was such a huge loss that you basically just got sadder as the series progressed. Overall, I think this was a good stab at this genre. I just think a little more action, a little better pacing (dragged a little), and some work on the storyline to evoke more dramatic emotions from the audience, would have helped this movie drastically.
Boring. You can say I didn't get it, you can say whatever you want, but this is like the 100th movie that is just exactly like the house of flying daggers, hero, and many others.Predictable, flying people, "ninjas", stereotypical love (a ripoff from Romeo and Juliette, two lovers that have to be apart because they belong to different clans) and so many things.I would really prefer to do so many other things: read a book about Japan's History, watch Blade Runner, Taxi Driver or the GodFather. These are all things that can not be considered a waste of time, they may even add something to your life, beyond culture and a few enjoyable conversations with your friends. This "movie" will not.A total waste of time.
