As somebody who had not heard any of this before, it became a curious phenomenon to sit and watch a film and slowly have the realities begin to click into place.
The story, direction, characters, and writing/dialogue is akin to taking a tranquilizer shot to the neck, but everything else was so well done.
The film never slows down or bores, plunging from one harrowing sequence to the next.
The movie turns out to be a little better than the average. Starting from a romantic formula often seen in the cinema, it ends in the most predictable (and somewhat bland) way.
Whether you liked the movie or not almost doesn't matter. Writer/director Adam Rifkim thought of and respected Burt Reymolds enough to create a movie just for him in order to give the 82 year old Reynolds a chance to do something he probably thought he'd never get a chance to do again: star in a movie. And as a bonus, Rifkin actually made a nice little "tribute" movie that I really enjoyed. Sure, there were aspects to the movie that weren't original, but the story was nice, Reynolds was terrific, and it was great seeing him on the screen again. Good job and thank you Adam Rifkin!
Burt Reynolds I still a hunk and is a perfect person for this movie. Catch your emotions like nothing else. Just watch this portrayal and come away with feel good emotions. Only written for Burt Reynolds. Love, love, love this movie.
To those under 50 Burt Reynolds may seem to be merely another bad hangover from the 70's- like disco, polyester suits, bell bottoms and Astroturf. Burt was the worlds #1 male sex symbol, actually doing a fairly innocent nude centerfold for "Playgirl" magazine (is that still around?) and romancing numerous Hollywood actresses both on and off the screen. He popped up on Johnny Carson and other late night tv as well as variety shows, even Monday Night football. His movies were huge at the BO although the quality of his pictures is somewhat limited, at least compared to other male stars of the period such as Nicholson, Eastwood & DiNiro. By the 80's his star power was diminishing and by the 90's his career was limited to supporting roles, the only memorable one being his portrayal of producer Jack Horner in "Boogie Nights" a look back at the 70's so-called golden era of porn flicks. In TLMS, set in present day, Burt plays Vic Edwards- an 80ish retired actor whose career bears an amazing resemblance to Burt's. Like Burt, Vic has found there are several generations who are pretty much unacquainted with his career, perhaps having seen a few of his numerous car chase movies on VCR. His looks and star power are both long gone. I'd imagine the hardest part of acting is to open yourself and expose your innermost feelings and soul in portraying a character at in TLMS Burt Reynolds has to expose himself and all his vulnerabilities, failures and fears. It is masterfully done and I hope (but doubt) that Reynolds receives recognition for Best Actor at the Oscars next year. He is superb in a movie that could have gone off track and turned into a silly farce, but stays with the theme that all fame is fleeting.
There are few male movie stars such as John Wayne, James Stewart, Henry Fonda of the 40s and 50s and 60s era, and after like Clint Eastwood, Paul Newman, Robert Redford, who when the movie is below average, they would still give a good performance. Burt Reynolds is in that group. He always gave his best. The last time I saw Reynolds was on an episode of Fastn Loud where they were replicating the Smokey and the Bandit Transam. At the time I thought, Burt has really aged, and proberbly he won't make another movie. How wrong I was. What a really refreshing movie, Burt gave an excellent performance as a semi-biographical actor. Don't miss it. After watching Deliverance again, you realized Burt made alot of mistakes with his movie career, but we still love him. Amen
