Fresh and Exciting
One of the most extraordinary films you will see this year. Take that as you want.
There are moments in this movie where the great movie it could've been peek out... They're fleeting, here, but they're worth savoring, and they happen often enough to make it worth your while.
Blistering performances.
What a peculiar film. Its a cartoon mostly with cats, but I'd never show it to a child. It samples many X-rated themes: cults, sex, homosexuality, violence, castration. But its played perfectly straight. Its a mystery, with elements of horror and science fiction. Its a unique movie. My closest comparisons would be Watership Down and The Plague Dogs. Its alright. For a lesser-known German animation, the animation is surprisingly well-done and fitting. I think the English dub is pretty good, too. Sadly, noir movies that focus on mystery alone don't work well for me. There's no character arc, and the revelation is bizarre enough to scratch my head, sane enough for me to shrug it off. Its an interesting sit, though. And not in a so-bad-its-good fashion. I'd lightly recommend it if it interests you, although I don't think its as good as others say.
I learned about this film on YouTube while watching "The Plague Dogs" (apparently I'm not alone) and decided to give it a watch. I read some information about it beforehand, so I was more or less prepared for the adult content when I saw it, and I was pleasantly surprised by the level of violence and darkness in an animated film. I always enjoy films that challenge the concept that animation = for kids. Animation is an art style, not a genre, and can be just as much for adults as for children. In short, Felidae is not a children's film. It contains sex, gore, violence, and so on. I find it surprising, though, how so many people comment on the mating scene--which lasts only a matter of seconds and is done quite subtly--but I have seen hardly any mention of the sexual artwork displayed on the wall in several scenes--artwork that clearly shows the genitals of nude humans having sex. I would have expected the latter to get more attention for "inappropriateness." There are a lot of other sexual references throughout the film, but as I said before, this is an adult film and so the sexual content is both acceptable and reasonable within the story. On a different note, speaking as the owner of four cats and someone who has had occasion to observe cat sex in real life, I can say the scene (and the film in general) is a rather accurate portrayal of cat behavior (the human-like qualities aside, of course.) Although I did think the gore in some parts was a bit excessive, but I like how the makers of the film went for a more realistic look instead of "dumbing it down." When an animal is ripped open, there's going to be a decent amount of blood and possibly guts showing, and drawing minimal gore would give the image less of an impact. I don't think any part was really too extreme or upsetting for the what the film was trying to do. There were only two scenes that were particularly disturbing to me personally: the experimentation scene because I know it's a real thing and the second nightmare with the puppet corpses because of the surreal appearance. The voice acting matched the characters and tone of the story quite well (I watched the German version with subtitles which, since I'm trying to learn German, had the added bonus of being good practice material). I did look at some clips of the English version, and although Francis' voice is a little too squeaky for my taste, the English voices were also pretty good.I have not read the book, so I can't speak about the effectiveness of the adaptation, but by itself, I enjoyed the appearance and plot of the film, and I don't see how it was easily predictable like some reviewers have said. I am someone who usually solves mystery stories before the characters do, and I didn't figure this one out until after Joker was killed. There were plenty of twists that kept the mystery fresh and interesting. The only thing I wish the film did better was the portrayal of animal lab experimentation. While the one scene that shows it does so in a wonderfully horrifying way, I feel giving the animal cruelty aspect a larger role in the film would have made the message stronger.Unfortunately, since animation films are generally expected to be child-friendly material, films like Felidae that do not fit into that box are often pushed aside and forgotten. It's a shame because, when approached as an adult film, Felidae is really an excellent and intriguing mystery thriller.
For a film animated in the same way a children's film often is, this was amazing. It is definitely not for kids, but it points out the faults in science and religion, uncovers the cruel world of animal testing, and a number of unique characters are met: A typical housecat called Francis, who has a love for solving crime, his new but very rude friend/parter Bleubart (Bluebeard in English version), a blind cat with an abusive past, two neutered Siamese cats, a fat cat named Joker with a suicidal cult and many more. The film leads into a dark world of alleycats, where past animal experimentation left the neighbourhood a mess for the cats living there. Murder is on the rise, there is a psychotic cult of cats there, and they all seem to worship a mysterious figure by the name Claudandis. Francis moves in with his obese owner Gus, and immediately sees the crime first-hand, and notes as well that the neighbourhood has a toxic waste smell. He befriends Bluebeard, an old fat cat with a sense of crude humour and a love of eating fish, and he shows Francis around the neighbourhood a bit, introducing him to Kong (a mutant cat), Felicity (a blind cat disfigured in a past experiment) and Pascal (an ageing cat who can use a computer easily). Meanwhile Francis is plagued with nightmares, starting with a man in a white lab coat who has no face. After Felicity is decapitated in her own home, Francis dedicates his every move to stopping the criminal. One morning, he comes upon a VCR revealing a recorded tape of a medical laboratory in the neighbourhood that shut down due to a loss of funding. Three scientists had formerly worked there: Gray (only lightly mentioned), Ziebold (a scientist who eventually sees the experiments as cruel and therefore quits his job), and the alcoholic Professor Proterius, who drank himself to madness and was them murdered by a dangerous cat in the lab. Francis investigates even further and reveals a huge dark past to the seemingly average neighbourhood. One reason I love this film is because of the riddles hidden in it that apply to real-life, and the knowledge the film holds about genetics. My favourite scene is the one with Joseph Mendell and his massive graveyard, as he goes nuts screaming about hybrid plant experiments. I also love the portrayal of the various characters, each with a distinct personality. The only thing I hate is the amount of unnecessary R-rated intimacy scenes. Those scenes plus the many violent murder scenes and scenes portraying cruelty to animals in test labs concludes that this film really isn't right for kids. However, that isn't to say that this is not a very good movie. It's long since been one of my favourite ones along with Warning Sign (1985). Felidae originated in Germany, and was based on a mystery novel. Like Watership Down, the Plague Dogs, Sysco the Worst Disaster Ever Created and the Rats of N.I.M.H. the book/film Felidae is an allegory. I highly recommend it to everyone over the age of 15.
Felidae's tag line is "Der Katzenthriller," I think it means "Cat Thriller," and that is a perfect description of this dark animated movie. It is a trilling tale of a cat new to the neighborhood who is determined to solve the string of gruesome murders against the neighboring cats. There were some good twists in this movie, and until the final climax, I was kept guessing as to who the murderer was.Felidae is also NOT for children. There is a lot of extremely graphic violence, that even me as a 25-year-old was shocked to see. In spite of that, I really enjoyed this movie. I love cats, and I love dark animated movies like Watership Down and Plague Dogs. I'm not sure if anyone else who does not appreciate those things would enjoy this movie.Never the less, I stand by Felidae and consider it to be one of the greatest animated movies for adults. In fact, if you're only going to see ONE animated cat murder mystery movie, it should be Felidea.
