Sadly Over-hyped
This is a coming of age storyline that you've seen in one form or another for decades. It takes a truly unique voice to make yet another one worth watching.
Let me be very fair here, this is not the best movie in my opinion. But, this movie is fun, it has purpose and is very enjoyable to watch.
While it doesn't offer any answers, it both thrills and makes you think.
CITIZEN TOXIE is the last, to date, of the TOXIC AVENGER series and the fourth film in the franchise. It may have the biggest budget of the lot, but it's also the most poorly-made, an endless array of inane comedy and lame jokes and a film which outstays its welcome very quickly. The atmosphere is still the same but the jokes seem more tired than ever and the slapdash gore effects and offensive humour just doesn't have the same impact as before. You do get cameos from folk like Ron Jeremy and Corey Feldman but the old Troma magic just doesn't feel the same anymore.
I was beginning to wonder why I kept giving Troma films a chance because I usually end up very disappointed or even angry that people can make such utter crap. After the travesty that was Poultrygeist, I decided I wouldn't watch Troma anymore. Then I saw the Citizen Toxie 2 disc set for super cheap and being that I actually enjoyed the first Toxic Avenger, I figured why not. Citizen Toxie is definitely Troma's best that I've seen so far and it gave me hope that maybe Troma has a few good films after all.The acting is pretty bad and cheesy as usual but for this movie it adds to the fun. The story is stupid and moronic but this also makes it funny in a so-bad=it's-good sort of way. I've always said that the one thing that Troma is usually good at is gore. They don't use CGI but they do it the old fashioned way and I think that's really cool. This film had awesome gore and effects. Let's face it, Lloyd Kaufman is a total hack, but I think he actually did a good job on this. I definitely had a blast watching it and I hope you sit down and give it a chance like I did. You might be surprised.
IMDb reviews are full of hyperbole, and no one likes reviews claiming that a decent film is the best movie ever. However, that won't stop me from saying Citizen Toxie is the richest, most entertaining action comedy I have EVER seen. Every element (except, of course, the quality of the images and special effects, which is acceptable given the $500,000 budget) of the production is beautifully polished, and every second of the film has more raw "fun" than a person can take in during a single viewing. That said, many people just won't get it. I consider myself a fan of crude humor, but even I can't watch the first 20 minutes of the film, which feature retarded children getting shot, without feeling uncomfortable. And if you've never seen a Troma movie before, you'll probably get so hung up on the poor quality of the DVD transfer and makeup/special effects that you won't be able to watch the movie itself. For everyone else, this movie is fantastic. It has a clever and engrossing plot and a creative cast of charming characters, and is so completely packed with action, subtle (really!) and not-so-subtle humor, and pure fun that even after four viewings, I get completely sucked in to the story and laugh all the way through. It's easily Troma's best film, and (this sounds blasphemous) the original "Toxic Avenger" doesn't even compare. I can't wait to see what comes next.PS-I showed select, pg-13 segments of this film to my aging parents see what normal people think of it, and they loved it too.
OK, I have only wised up to Troma's greatness within the last 5 years, so I'm still finding the ones I like. Mostly, the one's by Lloyd I like... this one kicks a**! Right behind Sgt. Kubkiman, NYPD, ToxieIV is my favorite Troma outing to date. As the other reviews have said, yes there's the required Troma gore, gags and boobies... and who doesn't like naked people covered in blood? OK, lots of people, but those aren't the people Troma's aiming at! Toxie IV has lots of funny lines, great camp, and it is pretty high technical quality, for a Troma movie. The extras are great and fun to watch. And someone else said that Troma can't be found at video stores, and as for Blockbuster, no they don't carry Troma cause they are way too mainstream. However, every Hollywood video here in Albuquerque has Troma in it... the Hollywood film library at Juan Tabo & Candelaria actually has over 50 Troma titles in stock, including all 4 Toxies! Maybe that's not the case everywhere, but at least here in NM Hollywood loves Troma! NM loves Troma (hence the TramDance NM Film Festival)! Troma Troma Troma! Oh, ps, Tito, while an extremely offensive character, is too funny!!!!
