So much average
It's complicated... I really like the directing, acting and writing but, there are issues with the way it's shot that I just can't deny. As much as I love the storytelling and the fantastic performance but, there are also certain scenes that didn't need to exist.
A great movie, one of the best of this year. There was a bit of confusion at one point in the plot, but nothing serious.
An old-fashioned movie made with new-fashioned finesse.
While this movie is 2 years older than I am, I still decided to sit down to watch it. Why? Well, because it is a zombie movie, and I am a huge zombie afficianado. Anything even remotely zombie, and I am there. It turns out that "A Virgin Among the Living Dead" (aka "La nuit des étoiles filantes") was a rather boring and uneventful movie. Who could have guessed? The story seemed pointless, to be bluntly honest, and it was really hard to immerse oneself into the movie and absorb it.The characters are one-dimensional and you don't really take a particular liking to any of them.I was unfortunate enough to watch an English dubbed version, which was just awful as dubbing usually is. Per default I try to avoid dubbed versions because a movie should always be enjoyed in its original language. And then when you have questionable dubbing, like it was here, it just worsens the movie experience."A Virgin Among the Living Dead" was hardly a memorable movie or an outstanding movie. I have now seen it once and can check it off my "watched movie" list, and I know that I will never return to watch it again.
Jess Franco one's my favorite director,l like your style and erotic approach that him put in your pictures, but "La nuit des ètoiles filantes" wasn't good enough,by the way in the early 70' Franco didn't make good movies, The story is about a girl who never lives with your parents arrived from London in a little village and took in a family's Castle where are your uncle among the weird people to hear in next day her father's will, meanwhile she realize that something is wrong, talking with neighbors who telling to her that in the Castle don't have anyone living there, acceptable franco's works....as always!!!
Originally planning to watch a one movie of writer/director/actor Jess Franco's titles,I was happily caught by surprise, when a very kind fellow IMDber sent me not one,but two Franco movies!,which led to me stepping outside,so that I could mingle with the living dead. The plot:Leaving London behind so that she can attend the reading of her dad's will on a remote island, (as you do!) Christina Benton finds herself feeling incredibly uncomfortable around her surviving family members.Spending time with her family before the reading of the will,Benton starts to see her family involved in rather strange events, which leads to Benton having serious doubts over what is a dream, and what is reality. After the reading of the will,Benton finds her Family completely dismissing questions about how Benton's dad death.Suspecteting that her dad's death may have been far from natural,Benton begins to investigate the reason behind her family's strange behaviour.View on the film:Filmed as co-writer/ (along with Paul D'Ales) director (along with Jean Rollin and Pierre Querut) and co-star Jess Franco was grieving over the death of actress Soledad Miranda, (who was chosen as the original lead star of the title)Franco shows an unexpected level of (some) restrain.Franco and cinematographer José Climent give the film an intense dream-like appearance,as Benton's search for the cause of her dad's death, leading to Benton walking the line between earth and the afterlife.Joined by a wonderful score from Bruno Nicolai, the writer's cover the vivid horror moments with a strong air of mystery, thanks to the screenplay taking a vague approach to the background of the Benton's life, which slowly opens itself as Christina enters the unknown.Taking the role originally written for Soledad Miranda, the gorgeous Christina von Blanc gives an alluring performance as Christina Benton, with Blanc striking a really graceful note as she searches for the details of her dad's death.whilst in his performance, Jess Franco hits the movie with a superb bonkers note as his laugh goes across the screen,as Benton discovers that she is among the living dead.
I'll start out by saying that this movie begs, yearns, cries out, pleads for more gore. I was hoping for much much more, but on a creepy, sleazy level, "A Virgin Among the Living Dead" did not let me down one bit.It starts out as a trippy art-house horror film that could have only come out of the early 1970's. It generates into a lucid dream-like Gothic horror film that moves a little slowly and ends with a little too much 'blah' for my tastes.I went into this one not expecting much; Jess Franco has a way of letting me down. I got a lot more than I thought I would, as this is easily one of the most enjoyable of his films. The title is a bit confusing though; there really aren't any zombies. Plenty of nudity though for you horn dogs.Don't be fooled by imitations: the Image Entertainment version is the ONLY way to go here, a great transfer with superior quality. Watch it on a dark and stormy night.7 out of 10, kids.
