Jesus Christ Superstar

Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber's Jesus Christ Superstar first exploded onto the West End stage in 1971 and it was clear that the musical world would never be the same again. For the first time ever, Jesus Christ Superstar has been specially filmed for video. Shot at Pinewood Studios, this brand new filmed stage version starring Glenn Carter and Rik Mayall captures one of the best score Andrew Lloyd Webber has ever written and is packed with hit songs including, 'I Don't Know How To Love Him', 'Gethsemane' and 'Superstar'.

Good films always raise compelling questions, whether the format is fiction or documentary fact.

This is a small, humorous movie in some ways, but it has a huge heart. What a nice experience.

Seriously? Why?! The actors couldn't sing OR act, the director took VERY liberal liberties with many things (Simon wasn't a militant, he just thought Jesus should take some action against their oppressors, and other things), and if a modern version of a classic WERE necessary (which it isn't) this is a horrible excuse for a modern equivalent of the original. Carl Anderson is doing somersaults in his grave. The singing was also very guttural. Even at Gethsemane when the singing is supposed to be smooth and calming it sounds like robots singing an announcement versus a group of men sitting down to dinner (like the original). Every syllable in the entire production is pronounced...and that's annoying.

Maybe it's because this was the first version I've seen (I've only watched specific songs from the 1973 version to compare) but I love it! I'm Jewish, so I'm not that invested in the story of Jesus and whether it's blaspheme or not, so I can just enjoy it for what it is: A great story with fascinating characters.I love the modernization of the story- I love the "Simon Zealotes" scene with the machine guns, I love the outfits, I love Herod's cheesy number, I love all of it. I think it's a great idea and makes it more accessible for it's current audience.I found Carter's Jesus more human and likable than the one from 1973. I love seeing him get angry, happy, tormented, tired...I love seeing his fear in "would you die for me" and the looks he exchanges with Judas throughout the whole thing- it really speaks volumes.I loved Peter and Mary's "Could we start again" duet, I think their voices are better (and mesh better) than the 1973 version and while I think Simon looked a bit too much like a "boy band", I liked "Simon Zealotes" more than that crazy dancing in 1973 that I wasn't sure if I was amused or scared by. I think Mary over-acted a few scenes, but she's got a gorgeous voice and is very sensual.Which brings me to Judas. Now I'll admit- Carl in 1973 has a better voice (apparently Jerome Pradon is a Baritone singing Tenor in this) but this Judas has completely won me over. The reactions, acting, emotions- he's so wonderful I completely fell for his Judas. Even when Pradon's singing got a bit too high for him, his acting more than made up for it IMHO. I keep re-watching scenes with him and catching little gestures and expressions- especially in the scenes between him and Jesus. It doesn't hurt that I found him completely hot, mind you!The Priests were creepy, even if Caiaphas went a bit too low for his own good. Annas I found was extremely creepy and disturbing- so well done! Pilate I found was interesting. Sometimes I had to laugh at his expressions and over-enunciating, but then again, sometimes he moved me- like the tears he had in his eyes in "Pilate's dream".All and all I highly recommend this, if you come with an open mind. The first time I saw this it was a bit weird, but the second time I started getting obsessed with it.

Others have explained already why this was such a travesty. I'll just pile on that, to say that this remake is really a catastrophe. The actors can't act, or rather, overact all the time, and what they do completely contradicts what they say. Judas is supposed to be, according to the lyrics, a fundamentally good man who finds himself misunderstanding Jesus and tries to stop him before the latter compromises their lives. In this production, Judas is just this meanie-meanie-pooh with a leather jacket who whine all the time and is violent with women.Jesus is this ridiculous guy with only two facial expressions who faints every two seconds and seems to not know what he's doing for the greater part of the movie. I'm not even talking about the ridiculous set and costumes which makes the "film" look like a bad late 90s MTV music video - a mix between S Club 7 and The Matrix. It's already dated, unlike the 73 version which for all its bell-bottomry is timeless. You've seen the 73 version? Don't bother with this one - find some vids on youtube for a good laugh and that's it. Never seen any version yet? RUN!!!! RUN and get the 73 version - a real film, with a real story, real actors and real singers.

As if the similar 1999 production of "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" wasn't nauseating enough, the Really Useless (I mean, Useful... ahem) Group adds insult to injury by ***mangling*** Webber and Rice's only solid collaboration, "Jesus Christ Superstar." Jesus isn't the one who gets crucified here. It's Ted Neeley. And Carl Anderson. And those of us who watched this hoping to see an interesting new take on it.It was certainly a new take, but one that spat on a phenomenal play *and* a phenomenal movie. (What's worse is that the video box says it's available to see for the first time ever... ouch.) What's bad about it? Let's even skip the dismal casting decisions (Judas is guiltier of being a hack than a traitor here) and focus on what the strangers in a great land make of this play. Jerome Pradon whines his songs, which are many, my poor moviegoer. Frederick B. Owens needs to clear his throat. Somebody *please* get Caiaphas a cough drop! "Then We Are Decided," a vital song, is missing, and Jesus (Glenn Carter) bears an eerie and uncalled-for resemblance to "Joseph"'s Donny Osmond. Two cast members are pretty good-- Renee Castle, who is almost a match for Yvonne Elliman, and Tony Vincent, who beats Larry Marshall as Simon by actually having the talent to back up his enthusiasm. Unfortunately, they, like the promising Rik Mayall (poor Rest Home Ricky!), are nothing in the presence of nightmares like Carter and Pradon. One more thing. By casting a talentless Pilate, they've ruined one of my favorite scenes from cinema history ("Trial Before Pilate" in the 1973 movie). This overdone and infuriating redo gets 3 out of 10, and the only reason it gets those extra 2 stars is for two reasons: the squandered potential of both the show and Castle, Vincent, and even Mayall. Avoid like leprosy.
