The movie turns out to be a little better than the average. Starting from a romantic formula often seen in the cinema, it ends in the most predictable (and somewhat bland) way.

Paris is a film about a diverse group of people that are living in the big capital city of France called Paris. They include: Pierre, a cabaret dancer who learns from a cardiologist that he has a severe heart condition; Élise, Pierre's sister and a social worker, divorced with three children;Roland, an academic at the Sorbonne and expert on the history of Paris;Jean,a vegetable market vendor and separated from Caroline,a fellow market worker;Philippe,Roland's brother and a successful architect whose wife Mélanie is pregnant with their first child;Khadija, a student of North African background, who is looking for work;Laetitia, a Sorbonne student who begins a relationship with a fellow student; and Benoit, who tries to cross the borders of France from Cameroon without the necessary legal immigration paperworks. The cast includes Juliette Binoche,Romain Duris,Fabrice Luchini,François Cluzet,Mélanie Laurent,Maurice Bénichou and Karin Viard.French director Cédric Klapisch keeps the movie moving but making the viewer excited on what is going to happen in the next scene. While the story is definitely far from being realistic as the number of characters in this movie and the events that happen in their life get to intersect in more ways than one in one big and busy city where millions of people live. But nevertheless, one would definitely still find the movie both enjoyable and entertaining. This ensemble drama has great performances from the cast and each character are involved in an intriguing story of their own.

I could watch any film starring the beautiful and talented French actress Juliette Binoche and have seen most of her England-language work, but naturally most of her 40 or so movies are in her first language, including this one from 2008."Paris" is not just a French film, it is a quintessentially Gallic flic. Writer and director Cedric Klapisch makes the eponymous capital city almost an actor in itself with plentiful shots of familiar and unfamiliar locations and typical French spots like the cafe, the boulangerie, and the food market. Also tres Francais is the plentiful dialogue, the existential angst, the beautiful women, the mandatory intellectual, and the odd couplings (although the actual sex is never seen), while Klapisch gives us unconnected characters (Paris is the only thread) and unresolved lives (more like real life than reel life).Binoche plays a social worker who clearly takes her professional work seriously because she is herself a single mother of three children and needs to take time off work to care for her brother (Romain Duris) who has a heart condition that may be fatal. It's all very watchable with social concerns leavened with some humour, but in the end I found it rather indulgent and too loosely worked. Some more narrative structure and drive would have lifted the film from a curiosity to a cur

I love French cinema and Paris - but did not have high hopes for this film. I rented it because I was missing Paris and could tell that the film would have great shots of Paris- and it did. I have never cared for Binoche. I found the beginning of the film to be hackneyed and trite. The character of the professor was off-putting and a bit creepy. Nevertheless- by the end of the film, I was won over and I think the film is good but not great. One of my favorite activities (shared by many visitors to Paris) in Paris is watching the life swirl around me on the streets and in the surrounding houses. This film captures this experience. We are brought into the interlocking worlds of a number of characters whose lives intersect in ways they do and do not perceive. Although there are some truly clunky aspects (the affair between student and prof was not credible, the young man's illness seemed to be conveyed in an unconvincing manner, the last-minute intersection of the professor and the dying man, the motorcycle accident, the fashionistas in the warehouse) of this conceit in the film, the melange is ultimately messy, unresolved, and poignant. One is left with a true appreciation for the people whose lives touch our own. Some of the best scenes: the small-minded owner of a boulangerie the party scene (what great dancing) the father-to-be the cruelty of the young student the tenderness between the fruit seller and Elise Elise and her childrenThe last scene- where the (possibly) dying man looks upon his nieces and nephew, says good bye to this sister, and takes a cab to the hospital- was just like the film itself- hackneyed, trite, and clunky in places ---but ultimately true-to-life, messy, unresolved, poignant and somewhat magical.

At first, I wanted to see it for the setting of the story, then I had some misgivings because it might turn out to be a showcase for famous French character actors, without much of a story. I was pleasantly surprised to see it that it was complex, heartfelt, and very engaging on top of being one of the most gorgeous French films ever. Its beauty originates from the way the story is executed. "Paris" is not hesitant to show emotions; yet this are wrapped in the usual, multi-layered style of foreign films, where nothing is simple or very obvious. This time there is a balance between getting emotional and trying to show it with style. There are several intimate scenes, bordering, on a style that is so realistic, it's almost like being there, filming a documentary; so immersed are the performers in their roles such an atmosphere develops. One truly remarkable scene has them in a party, and it is hard to believe this is a fictional movie. Each of the dozens of performers seems to belong there. They don't seem to be playing fictional characters; instead, they seem to be real people in front of a camera, recording a private time in their lives. The film deals with many story lines, but the core theme is "Life is important, regardless of its stage." We see rich people, merchants, brothers and sisters, immigrants, many facets of the Paris of today, and they all share emotions and situations; they all must deal with consequences, unexpected events, with all life offers / takes away. There is love, death, anger, romance, silliness, family, and more, spontaneous connections, deep relationships, all make brief but felt appearances. There have been similar films before, but I can't think of one so well realized, so beautifully performed, and especially, lovingly photographed and scored. It is a postcard and a tribute to a city that prides itself with being beautiful, sophisticated, and dares to admit not everything is perfect or harmonious."Paris" offers some of the most exciting and best hours of movie making this year, and you should treat yourself to it.
