Very good movie overall, highly recommended. Most of the negative reviews don't have any merit and are all pollitically based. Give this movie a chance at least, and it might give you a different perspective.

This is one of the best movies I’ve seen in a very long time. You have to go and see this on the big screen.

LONELY ARE THE BRAVE is a western drama about a lonely cowboy, who has rudely confronted with the loss of his reality. It is based on the novel "The Brave Cowboy" by Edward Abbey. The main character is one of the last cowboys. He refuses to join the modern society and its achievements. He respects his law and laws of the old West. As he crosses a highway into a town in New Mexico, his horse has a difficult time crossing the road, confused and scared by the traffic. They enter town to visit his old friends. His friend is in prison for giving aid to illegal immigrants. To break his friend out of jail, he decides he himself needs to get arrested. His plan is successful and he persuades his friend to escape from the prison. However, his friend has a clear attitude ...This is a simple and very exciting story. The plot is based on differences in character between the main protagonists and their views on the achievements of society and laws. A tepid line of humor and old love give a nostalgic tone to this story. The behavior of the protagonists and impressive scenery contribute to the believability of this film. The certain interruptions such as a bubble gum, helicopter or washer are completely unnecessary, and it has disturbed a specific balance between the traditional and modern conception.Kirk Douglas as John W. "Jack" Burns is a lonely and brave cowboy, unfriendly and irresponsible idealist who has more confidence in his horse than in humans. He, it seems, wants to win the modern world and prove to himself that his way is correct. Mr. Douglas has offered a very convincing performance. Walter Matthau as Sheriff Morey Johnson is a personification of understanding and duties as Jack's pursuer. He has, through a semi-comical game, rejected both concepts. Their support is Gena Rowlands (Jerry Bondi) as Jack's old love and a woman's voice of reason, Michael Kane (Paul Bondi) as Jack's friend, who has accepted the law and rejected tradition and a sense of freedom and George Kennedy (Gutierrez) as a sadistic deputy, who is actually an ordinary chicken. The ending is quite touching.

Excellent movie. I had it downloaded long time a go but never watched it before. Tonight I was a bit bored and decided to watch this movie. What a treat! But how sad is the end, even if you know that the horse is not shot there, the magic of the movies puts that in your brain and you feel it is true. Other movies which "moved" me: The shooting of the wolf in "Dances with wolves" made me so angry at the shooters and so sad too that I cried, and I cry every time I watch the movie, basically I am a "victim" of the movie magic. Normally, after I watch a movie, I usually delete it to make space for more, and I have of course some movies that I do not delete and I keep them for my eternity. Well "Lonely are the brave" will not be deleted and will rejoin my favorite movie collection. And yes, at the end, I will certainly cry, but then I am not made out of wood and having my feelings so moved tells me the making of this movie was just incredibly great. My vote is not a 10 as I believe there is no perfect movie, but a 9 is well deserved. One more thing, the black and white for this movie gives so many different shades that it is also very nice. "RIP Whisky"...

This is not a "western" as I went into the film thinking. Yes, Kirk Douglas does play a loner cowboy, but in the very first scene, he must cross a highway while on his horse in order to get to the farm of the wife (Gena Rowlands) of an old friend. A fight in the bar with a one-armed drunk results in him being sentenced to a year in prison, and once he gets in (immediately locking horns with guard George Kennedy), he's planning his escape. This takes him back to the widow's house and finally to the mountains where he is able to outwit the law, at least for a while. With tongue-in-cheek, cynical cop Walter Matthau sits back and watches Douglas use his knowledge of the mountains to survive discovery by Kennedy (on whom he gets delicious revenge) and the other insipid lawmen who not only battle him but nature too. Like Stallone did in "Rambo" (a bit more violently), Douglas is stuck between having been convicted of breaking a ridiculous law and trying to remain honorable, and as the showdown reaches into nightfall, you know that disaster is only moments away. The film is never preachy or smug, yet at times, characters come in (like Carroll O'Connor's truck driver) who just seem out of place. But everybody is there for a reason, and the end is really surprising and sadly ironic. Bill Raisch, as the nasty one-armed drunk, is one of the most hideous villains in films and his motives of hate for Douglas is absolutely vile.

Kirk Douglas has said that "Lonely Are The Brave" is his absolute favorite of all the movies he has done. It doesn't take much thought to determine why he feels this way. The movie's central character, Jack Burns, is a non-conformist, someone who always does things his way no matter what society may tell him differently. There are few other movie protagonists like this one. Other merit found in the movie includes some tense moments while Jack is on the run, plus a gutsy and unconventional ending that you probably couldn't get away with today. If there is a flaw to be found in this good movie, it may be that some modern day viewers may object to the pacing. It takes about half of the movie before Jack is on the run, and some scenes do seem to run a little longer than they should. While every scene DOES provide some purpose, I think the movie would have been improved had several scenes been cut down in length slightly. But even without this correction, the movie is never boring and is always interesting.
