Absolutely brilliant
When a movie has you begging for it to end not even half way through it's pure crap. We've all seen this movie and this characters millions of times, nothing new in it. Don't waste your time.
The story-telling is good with flashbacks. The film is both funny and heartbreaking. You smile in a scene and get a soulcrushing revelation in the next.
I'll keep this review short as many others have already explained the film. Overall, this is a slow moving film that doesn't really go anywhere. The trailer makes the film look like a comedy which is why I chose it. However, the film seems more about teen depression. I loved the way the film started, it's straight in and we're off. It was going well up until they met Anton Yelchin and then the film slowed down and didn't really go anywhere after that. In someways you can blame the trailer for that. I was expecting a sassy murder comedy but got a much darker, slower moving film. I quite liked it's but I feel it just missing something. Anyway, overall a 6/10 for me.
My wife and I watched this at home on DVD from our public library. Both young actresses are in good form, they make the movie good. The title may come from the fact that one of the girls had horses in her upbringing, but it could as easily refer to the two girls and their status in life.British actress Olivia Cooke is Amanda, smart but often detached, she has a disorder which prevents her from having normal feelings, fear, remorse, empathy, etc. She reconnects with her old friend who was going to a private school, American actress Anya Taylor-Joy as Lily, when Amanda's mother hires Lily to tutor Amanda. Then Lily's problems start to surface, she is not what she appears, she has difficulty dealing with expectations placed on her, and seems to loathe her stepfather who likes to have everything under control. The other key character is played by Anton Yelchin, who suffered an untimely death in 2016, as small-time 27-yr-old drug dealer Tim. Amanda has an idea, why doesn't Lily just kill her stepdad? All of this sets up some funny but dark situations. I enjoyed the movie strictly as a different type of entertainment, my wife no so much so. I suppose it isn't for all tastes.
I'm not sure this movie classifies as a comedy film. It's a light movie, but it's more serious than funny if you ask me. I really love this indie movie, and I watched it because of Anya Taylor-Joy. She did phenomenal and so did Olivia Cooke.More indie films like this! (:
It's confusing and boring... I should've just wasted my time eating without watching...
