The Worst Film Ever
It's entirely possible that sending the audience out feeling lousy was intentional
it is finally so absorbing because it plays like a lyrical road odyssey that’s also a detective story.
There are moments in this movie where the great movie it could've been peek out... They're fleeting, here, but they're worth savoring, and they happen often enough to make it worth your while.
If you have certain expectations of grandeur before viewing this film your probably going to be very disappointed. The title alone says 'leave you're brain at the door'. This type of film's target audience isn't everyone, its for people who enjoy movies like 'Strange Brew' Bob & Doug McKenzie, 'Dumb & Dumber', 'Animal House' even the Three Stooges though they are more slapstick type humor but fit into the genre of ridiculous stupid humor. If you couldn't stand or absolutely hated this movie you could of easily saved yourself from it by realizing Tom Arnold was in the starring role, that alone should have raised a red flag for you if you don't like this type of 'stupid' humor. You should have asked yourself 'what types of movies has Tom Arnold been in before?'I love these types of movies! No not all the time, but those times when I need to really chill, turn off my brain from work, society, everyday life etc... Stupid humor like one of my favorite movies 'Strange Brew' is in order in life now and then. If you were expecting 'Pulp Fiction' or 'Reservoir Dogs' your at the wrong show! 'The Stupids' is just an occasional guilty pleasure when my brain needs a serious break. It's not a laugh a minute, but is very funny throughout. I caught the Mark Metcalf Neidermeyer throwback right away, awesome! Captain Kangaroo from my childhood was a nice addition. Christopher Lee's character was also funny and ludicrous as most of this movie is. It all fits together into a nice 'let's sit down, turn our brains off for awhile and soak in some ridiculous 'stupid' content for a nice break from life'. Not sure who could have nailed Stanley Stupid any better than Tom Arnold, he fits the role very well. The only other one I could think of would be Christopher Lloyd, maybe. If you enjoy mindless humor you owe it to yourself to see this film at some point. If you go to an Iron Maiden concert and complain about the high volume and wonder where Julio Iglesias is your at the wrong show. Same goes for 'The Stupids'. If you go into it expecting an 'A' high caliber movie you have to closely follow the story to try to figure out 'who done it' or who is really the villain 'The Stupids' is not for you. So for the rest who love mindless, ridiculous humor see the movie!
Utter, complete, total garbage! STAY AWAY PLEASE! I am lost for words to describe just how belittling and patronizing this is. I've noticed that one reviewer commented on the "classic" scenes such as 'I'm My Own Grandpa' or something like that...well I just saw this supposed masterpiece of a scene and it is pathetic.I can understand that this movie is being deliberately stupid but that is exactly what bugs me. The acting and the supposed funny moments are clearly fake, predictable, overacted, clichéd and not funny. Dumb & Dumber for instance was also about two abnormally stupid guys but there was a sense that the movie allowed for you to pick up the stupid moments-and yes, while they weren't hard to pick up at least it wasn't in-your-face-turn-at-the-camera-and-over-emphasize-the words type of moments.Furthermore, in Dumb & Dumber while the two main characters were stupid, nobody else in the movie was. Here, EVERYBODY in the movie is as stupid, dim and dense as the main 'characters'. And at least D&D had a degree of realism in that as stupid as the main characters were, their low-life lifestyle matched them. Here, the Stupids are a well-off family yet utterly useless! I realize I may be babbling but movies like this irritate because I fail to see why people bother making them and in so doing insult moviegoers to such a degree. There's no no pint in "taking intelligence out of the equation" as one reviewer noted because if a movie can be funny and entertaining with a degree of intelligence in it, why should you take intelligence out of this movie? Is it because the makers had none themselves and were too lazy to put in an effort with this movie? It's a crime to call this a comedy or a movie. The animated pets and aliens at the end utterly made me lose the plot! I only watched about 20min and I was left irritated for days. It is annoying and a waste of time...you'd have a better time listening to your plants grow.
I absolutely find this movie to be very entertaining, funny, and full of great lines! Due to the mixed reviews and somewhat low ratings, I'd definitely consider this film to be a cult classic. Winning the Razzie Award for Worst Actor must have been a dream come true for Tom Arnold and he's sure at his best in this very movie! Possibly the best part in this movie is the song "I'm My Own Grandpaw", sung by Tom Arnold! The song is very nostalgic and funny! I don't care if this film wasn't well-received or if it grossed a reasonably small amount of money. I still love this movie, and for all those who are giving this film negative reviews, return your negative reviews to Sender! This film is one of the cult best!
Only rent or buy this if you like the sort of humour displayed in movies like Kung Pow and Mr. Bean. This movie is so stupid that even veterans of the slapstick comedy genre will be cringing. Just look at the quotes and you'll have some nice examples of what I mean. "MAN BUSH, you have no equal!" The plot is interesting - Stanley Stupid wakes up one day to discover his garbage stolen again from right outside his own home. Determined to find those responsible, he sets off on a quest to find a man called Sender, who through... crazy and foolish logic, he believes is planning a worldwide conspiracy to steal the world's garbage.Along the way he uncovers a military weapons distributing operation, which forms most of the opposition in the plot, as they try to kill him repeatedly, and through sheer stupidity and luck, he evades them. You can't accuse the story of being cliché or unoriginal - not many movies involve meeting God in a planetarium. The characters are all uniquely stupid, and while their clothes are as unpleasant as fashion can be, they're all very entertaining. Except the daughter, who may annoy more than entertain, but you get those in every movie. All in all, as long as you're looking for a film with humour so.. STUPID, you'll wet yourself, then you'll probably laugh yourself silly watching this. I first saw it back in 1997 or so, and only managed to find the video last year on ebay. It's a fairly rare video, I think, but I'm hoping it'll come out in Region 2 DVD before long :) Rent/Buy? The humour can be a specialised taste. I'd recommend renting it, but if you can buy it for a reasonable price, I recommend buying it in case you do like it, because it's pretty rare.
