Very very predictable, including the post credit scene !!!
Highly Overrated But Still Good
Admirable film.
Excellent and certainly provocative... If nothing else, the film is a real conversation starter.
This film is funny and stupid! Ain't no such thing as too much Steve Martin, baby. Here Martin carries weak material, but it's a positive movie. This doesn't even qualify as "so bad it is good". This is merely "so bad it is bad". Still, I like all of the comedians here. There's something for everyone here. I love this movie, which is hilarious! Sounds corny? No matter what anyone says, this is utterly fantastic. I refuse to totally dismiss this, because I find it quite engaging, in a guilty pleasure sense. I thought this was cute and not bad. All of the fancy characters struggle against a system that has perpetuated falsehoods.
First of all - this is a remake, a remake of what may be the most funny and most viewed comedies by french people (I wouldn't be surprised if half the french population could recite the entire movie lines by heart). But where the original version was outrageous, provocative, disrespectful, politically incorrect etc... it has been watered down to nothing in the Steve Martin version. Everything that was funny is just blended down to a family viewing version which loose all appeal and originality. A total disaster and a shame.
I can understand the negative reviews by those who compare it to the original film (which I haven't seen), but some of the other reviews are just ridiculous. This is a truly charming film with some singularly quirky and entertaining performances, as well as more cameos than you can shake a stick at. And yeah, it's a dark film set during the holidays - a time when suicides go up, so what's more appropriate than a comedy featuring a suicide hotline? Yeah, the movie is a bit slow and even a bit of a downer at times, but that's non profit work for you. It does eventually arrives at a happy ending, but it earns it.This is EASILY Adam Sandler's best film - he's funny, goofy and charming - and Madeline Kahn is hilarious in this as well.I love grape jelly!
Is this the worst comedy film Steve Martin ever starred in? I think so. At least I thought so when I saw it a dozen years ago. I hope he hasn't done anything worse since this film. It would have to be brutal because this "comedy" was anything but humorous. It was disappointing to me because I am a fan of Martin's comedic talents and I usually enjoy the acting talents of Madeline Kahn and Juliette Lewis, as well as a few other supporting actors in here However, this script is pure garbage. In retrospect, now that I see that it is a Nora Ephron film, I'm not shocked how horrible this turned out. At least I have a lot of company in my opinion of how bad this film stinks.
