There is, somehow, an interesting story here, as well as some good acting. There are also some good scenes

The movie's neither hopeful in contrived ways, nor hopeless in different contrived ways. Somehow it manages to be wonderful

One of the worst ways to make a cult movie is to set out to make a cult movie.

I have a great collection of movies which does not include this. You don't watch this for entertainment purpose. Lethargic is what this is! Nothing is exciting here. The acting, except that of Vivica Fox is way down par. The fight scenes are contrived and practically lacks the crispness and snap of action that is seen in Universal Soldier and Hard Target. Such waste!

The Hard Corps starts as notorious killer, gangster, drug dealer & general all round villain Terrell Singletery (Viv Leacock) is released from prison after only serving eighteen months of an eight year sentence because of his hot-shot lawyer. No sooner has Terrell left prison & he is arranging the murder of the man who put him there, namely ex-heavyweight boxing champion Wayne Barclay (Razaaq Adoti). His sister Tamara (Vivica A. Fox) & business associate Kendall Mullins (Peter Bryant) decide to hire Clarence Bowden (Julian Christopher) as a bodyguard to protect Wayne who in turn hires ex-army dude Phillippe Sauvage (Jean Claude Van Damme) to help him. During an attempt on Wayne's life Clarence is shot & killed which upsets & angers Phillippe who then decides to protect Wayne himself & find those who killed his friend...Co-written & directed by Sheldon Lettich this was the fourth time he & JCVD teamed up to make a film after Lionheart (1990), Double Impact (1991) & The Order (2001) although one has to say that out of the films they made together The Hard Corps is by far the worst & for me is probably the worst JCVD film I have seen. For a start the story is terrible, it's not involving in any way & is a bit of a chore to sit through. The script is standard direct-to-video/DVD stuff with a lightweight story, clichéd character's, limited ambition & lots of boring dialogue. I usually quite like JCVD but The Hard Corps is as bad as the rubbish Steven Seagal has been making lately, there's barely any fights or decent action scenes which is odd since JCVD is a martial arts expert & surely he & his skill's are the films best asset so why ignore it? The story plods along at a fairly sedate & boring pace & I just wasn't interested in anything that was going on, there's a really predictable plot twist at the end too which just confirms how clichéd & by-the-numbers it really is across it's near two hour duration. The action scenes here are well below par, JCVD has two fights both of which are poor & there's various dull shoot-outs & not a single car chase or explosion in sight. Disappointing. There's an amazing car at the start which Terrell is picked up in, most would need a stepladder just to get into the thing. The violence is tame & there's no nudity either. Apparently rap star DMX was hired to play the villain Terrell but went to prison so couldn't actually make the film, DMX was subsequently quoted in a magazine saying 'I'd rather have gone to prison anyway' & after watching The Hard Corps I sort of shared that sentiment. With a supposed budget of about $12,000,000 I don't see where the money went, although set in the US this was shot in Bucharest in Romania & in Vancouver in Canada. The acting is strictly average & no-one seems to have much heart in the film. The Hard Corps is probably the worst JCVD film I have seen & I have seen quite a few, light on action, light on originality & a dull forgettable story makes this one worth skipping.

Jean-Claude Van Damme stars as a special forces guy (you know the type) who is hired as a bodyguard for a world champion boxer, seems that a gangster has put a hit on said boxer, and despite Van Damme's reluctance, Vivica A. Fox convinces him to take on the case. The film I was most reminded of was Blackjack with Dolph Lundgren (Minus the color phobia angle.) and this is because the film features a similar plot line. Jean-Claude Van Damme is in decent form, he excludes a charisma and is in his strong action man role, which has been lacking lately in his later straight to video movies. Alas despite Van Damme's effective work the movie still doesn't work due to the over-edited action sequences and lame camera angles that cut away far too much so we can't get into the action as well. The choreography is certainly decent but the action is too chopped up to be effective. Also Van Damme has a group of other tough guys and gals helping out,so we see more action with them then with Van Damme, which is sort of a letdown. The movie is passable, I mean I wasn't bored with it and despite its routine story and predictability the movie does deliver what it promises. I just wish the movie would've given us more Van Damage and less camera trickery. In the end though it's not one of Van Damme's best. It is in fact a lesser film from Jean-Claude.* * out of 4-(Fair)

if you grew up in the eighties and nineties watching van damme and steven seagal's action films, you'll like this. it isn't Miami vice or heat(big budget, pretentious plot, etc) but it is a simple-minded action movie with plenty to offer regarding entertainment and a fair and square good old time.people tend to judge a film before watching it and the hard corps got bashed. van damme and steven seagal, old movie stars that ruled the box office a decade ago, were forgotten by the big studios. today is the era of jason stathan, tony jaa and the likes, all of them well-rounded by cgi special effects and big budgets, but, back then in the era of seagal and van damme, cgi wasn't around and what you saw was the real thing. god, I miss these guys' movies (van damme and seagal) in the theaters.things used to be more fun. it was a joy to watch out for justice, marked for death, bloodsport (every kid back then had to put the name on a huge list on the video store just to rent the tape). films like the hard corps bring the old times back and you'll have a good time watching it. it's about a washed up veteran who fought in Iraqi. he comes back a different, bitter man. as fate would have it, he has a second chance in life as a bodyguard to a tough but good hearted former heavyweight champion. great action sequences, van damme does his own stunts and also has some great fighting scenes, and a straight forward plot that won't change the world of movies, but will give you one helluva good time.
