RELEASED IN 2006 and written & directed by Brad Silberling, "10 Items or Less" is a drama about an aged has-been actor (Morgan Freeman) who researches for an indie gig after a four-year dry spell. He meets a spitfire checkout clerk named Scarlet (Paz Vega) at a supermarket in a Latino community of Los Angeles. Impressed by the young woman, he decides to help her while psyching-up for the role. The plot is obviously borrowed from 2003's "Lost in Translation." To key you off, the girl is named after Scarlett Johansson. But don't let that keep you from seeing this minor gem because the characters are very different, plus other nuances. For instance, Morgan's character (simply called "Him" in the cast list) reflects the "joy of living" (joie de vivre) as opposed to Bill Murray's amusing curmudgeon in "Lost in Translation." Moreover, "10 Items" is less melancholy; and the girl isn't naïve and overly sweet like Charlotte (Johansson) in "Lost." It's a small film, with the end credits rolling a mere ten minutes after the hour mark, and so it lacks the depth of "Lost" and isn't as moving (at least as far as pulling your romantic heartstrings), but it's more heartwarming and overall inspiring. THE MOVIE RUNS 1 hour 21 minutes and was shot in Brentwood, Los Angeles, and nearby Carson (to the south). GRADE: A-

Morgan Freeman plays an out-of-touch famous actor doing a little research in a grocery store for an upcoming role. He's fascinated with the angry cashier girl Scarlet (Paz Vega). She's stuck at the 10 Items or Less lane and she hates it. He can't remember the P.A.'s phone number and Scarlet reluctantly drives him. He's overly inquisitive and she's got an interview for a secretarial job.I love these two amiable actors. The plot isn't much of anything. This movie is all about the actors and the characters. I don't really feel much about Freeman's character. He's a Hollywood construct of a Hollywood stereotype. I wish he is more natural and I can't buy Freeman in this role. I wish their relationship is more compelling and more substantive. Paz Vega is great as an angry spitfire and touching. Although I don't know what she's auditioning for dressed like that.

I didn't know what Brad Silberling's '10 Items or Less'. I thought his 'City of Angels' was terrific and given that '10 Items or Less' had the unusual pairing of Morgan Freeman and Paz Vega, I was curious. Now after seeing this delightful little picture, I can say it's definitely worth watching. The story is about the randomness in life and how it can lead to something precious as is depicted through the random encounter of a famous actor and a supermarket cashier. The relationship between the two is beautifully portrayed through simple interactions. The one thing they have in common is that both these people are fed up with the current state of their lives and they want something better. While they plan on moving forward, as the actor attempts to make a comeback and the cashier goes to her interview, they are pessimistic and uncertain, questioning whether there's any point at all in taking a step forward if the result is going to be the same.I'm glad to finally see Morgan Freeman in a proper lead role. His actor is funny, charming, friendly, likable and smart. He more than proves that he can carry a lead role. Paz Vega wonderfully matches wits with Freeman as she holds her own. Cameos by Annie Dudek, Bobby Canavale and Jim Parsons are hilarious.'10 Items or Less' is another example of how less is more. The clever writing boasts of humour and satire. The running time is less than the standard 90 minutes. It has a very simple look to it and is made on a modest budget. Coupled with this are the writing, performances and direction that make '10 Items or Less' a movie treat.

This movie was absolutely wonderful. It was simple, easy, and unique. I had decided to watch it when I woke up, and for some reason, although I found nothing else appealing, this movie at first glance appealed to me. It was a great film; it showed that the simplest of people from different backgrounds and different personalities can be friends. It's touching. The simplicity of the movie kept me watching. Morgan Freeman and Paz Vega are a great pair in this movie! The movie touches sensitive points and at the same time puts some comedy in it. I think everyone should see it. I would recommend it to anyone. I absolutely love this movie.
