Wonderful Movie
Simply A Masterpiece
If you don't like this, we can't be friends.
what a terribly boring film. I'm sorry but this is absolutely not deserving of best picture and will be forgotten quickly. Entertaining and engaging cinema? No. Nothing performances with flat faces and mistaking silence for subtlety.
The House At The End Of Time is touted as being the first feature length horror-thriller from Venezuela...and it is that country's highest grossing film of all time.It tells the story of a woman named Dulce, based on the experiences she has after moving into a house with a dark history.Basically, the house had sat abandoned for years, only to see the government seize it and offer to a family in need.Enter Dulce and her family. They move into the house, only to start experiencing eerie phenomenon. Then, one night, they are attacked by ghosts: an old man carrying a knife, and a young boy, at least. We follow from the perspective of Dulce, who wakes up bleeding on the ground...only to find her husband stabbed...and watch her son be seized away into the darkness. For this, she is arrested. Because there is no evidence that anyone else was ever in the house...and she can't explain the dead body and missing boy.Fast forward 30 years later, and Dulce (now an elderly woman) has been released from prison and returned to her home. She is under protective custody, but is adamant that she wants to find her child. So she illicits the help of the local priest. He is able to offer her moral and psychological support, but the police won't let him hang around long enough to help otherwise. So, she is left to deal with things on her own.And this is where it starts to get trippy. She begins to experience the events from that fateful day in her past again...but from the other side.Effectively making her the ghost that has been haunting her past self. And as the story continues, you slowly start to realize...that her and her family have become lost souls...trapped in time...living out their torment cyclically, forever.Which might seem horrific, if there wasn't a couple of light-hearted- and extremely clever- twists at the end. This film is expertly constructed in a circular fashion. And the second half acts as a mirror image of the first (in reverse). In this sense, it works a lot like Oculus. In that it is an engaging puzzler, whose direction shifts drastically, as you get deeper into the film and are provided with more context. And that is what makes this film so damn enjoyable. It's not too complex either. It's really easy to follow, which leaves it accessible to more mainstream audiences. This is a great film that you should definitely check out.Not only does it scare you...it establishes Hidalgo as a master manipulator.Definitely see this...and don't wait for the remake.7.5 out of 10.
This was a really weird film. When I first heard of this film, the description would have you believe that this was a paranormal horror flick, that isn't the case int he least.I don't normally watch foreign films with subtitles, but I needed something new to watch and the reviews on IMDb gave me the impression it would be something I'd find enjoyable. I wasn't really impressed with the movie. This film is more like a thriller/Suspense film. It strings you along making you believe it is one kind of film and then it suddenly turns into some sort of weird scifi time travel film that makes no attempt at actually explaining itself. The actors were fine, the cinematography was acceptable. It was just a poorly written film. It was a lackluster film that tries to impress with a weird "twsit" and all it did was leave me unsatisfied.
"The House At The End Of Time" is a atmospheric blended genre film both elevated and stylish. It combines both the science fiction concepts of time warp and temporal rift with elements of paranormal and haunting illusionism. The film offers a Gothic nightmare to rival any horror or fantasy created by some of Latin America's more notable directors/storytellers. The story revolves around a family near destitute, offered the opportunity to have a home with the help of the local government. Unfortunately the house comes at a high price that far reaches any monetary cost. It harbors a chilling secreted past that is dark and very disturbing. Framed more as a haunted dwelling, and attached to the chilling paranormal 11:11 theory, "The House At The End Of Time" is one of the creepiest and dramatic horror films that I have seen. One that actually creates deep, emotional suspense and melodrama while offering a more heartfelt connection between the viewer and the characters on screen. Hidalgo is brilliant in his direction of this truly horrific situation. The acting is an even-paced, suspenseful display of despair, tension, and downright creepy character development. One that in the end gives us a true "happy ending" fitting a nightmare. It is a dark, theatrical foray of relationships, second chances, and tragedy embraced by heavy, atmospheric paranormal scenarios that keep this doomed family on the edge of hopelessness. "The House At The End Of Time" is impressive, thought provoking and cerebral. The special effects used in "The House At The End Of Time" are a collection of instrumental sound effects classic to a Gothic ghost story, typical paranormal camera tricks, and stellar make-up effects that give you the total haunting illusion while masking the nightmare's true nature. A nature that lends more to quantum theories of time distortions like the ones I mentioned earlier- temporal rifts and time warps. The overall effectiveness of the styling and illusions used here are executed beautifully, keeping the story's heavy sorrowful overcast, the dark subject matter, and melodrama in near perfect balance from the film's beginning right up until the more pleasant ending. "The House At The End Of Time" is fantastical story both dark and disturbing that I believe all movie fans will enjoy, not just horror fans.
I have to say, I've waited for this movie to drop on Netflix for almost 2 years. I've been reading about it for a while and its worth the wait.I'm going to be totally honest.. I turned this on at about 11pm and was going to fall asleep watching it. WELL, I DIDN'T! Good lord, there so much detail and storyline to take it and its all worth it at the end.You will be scared, get all emotional, and if you're a parent, you will get really emotional. Its a horror movie in the beginning, then it spirals into this emotional roller coaster until the end.Its worth a watch and worth a 2nd watch with all your friends. I'm telling you, if you're a mother and you watch this movie, you will ball!! Go for it!!
