Very disappointing...
To me, this movie is perfection.
Tells a fascinating and unsettling true story, and does so well, without pretending to have all the answers.
Like the great film, it's made with a great deal of visible affection both in front of and behind the camera.
This is one of the funniest movies I have ever seen. I live down south and find myself quoting this movie all the time. Watch this movie if you want to laugh so hard you might pee. Do not watch this movie if you are trying to break a world record for not laughing and only have 90 minutes to go.A great cast complements a script and this one was perfect. I've talked friends and family into watching this movie and everyone that's watched has told me it really is one of the funniest movies they have seen. There is some partial nudity and adult situations it may not be for everyone but I've shared this with folks I go to church with and They thought it was funny and in good taste.
Considering Joshua Jackson has a distinct Canadian accent he did a wonderful job sound like a "good 'ol boy" from Texas. Each character in this film plays a unique role in creating this surprisingly funny account of a young man from Texas. I especially liked the part where child Earl discovers he is not in fact Jesus Christ reincarnated when his daddy is killed while preaching to the heathens in the bars. DJ Qualls also stands out as borderline retarded Junior. The scene where Junior hands tinker the bag of panties and maxi pads when Tionker had asked for pantyhose to rob a pizza delivery person. Juniors explanation and solution were extremely comical. The only thing that makes this film not completely perfect was the shoot out in the warehouse. It just was not convincing that everyone gets shot except for the main characters. But Earl finally meeting his "daddy's killer" was pretty cool. This is a must see movie.
In sports, they have "most improved" and "comeback player" awards, yet the academy awards do not recognize actors for "most transformed". Although enjoyable, actors such as Clint Eastwood, Jack Nicholson, and Hugh Grant play generally the same character. Ryan Hurst goes from the strong, man-of-few-words, football star in "Remember the Titans" to the character Tinker in Lone Star State of Mind and steals every scene. Maybe the award could be named after Meryl Streep, who, well enough said. Hurst's performance alone is worth watching this movie, but add in the rest of the characters that figuratively and literally feel no pain, with a very funny script, and you will watch this movie repeated times. Having a category just for comedies, especially black comedies like this one, would be such a welcome change to the movie industry blockbuster junk. Having Tinker win an Oscar; Charlie Chaplin would have understood that.
I've lived most of my life in Texas and Oklahoma and this movie is very authentic. I've watched it many times and appreciate the script and characters more each time. Many surprises and twists in this movie. All the characters are very unique and funny. The dialogue is very fresh and funny and the running gags are excellent. You'll see things in this movie that you've never seen before and they are FUNNY. The directing is very tight and fast-paced, yet sentimental, more movies should be directed like this. While it is over the top in some places that does not detract from the overall hilarity of the movie. I'm watching it now as I write this review and just heard another line of dialogue I hadn't noticed before, very funny.
