Exactly the movie you think it is, but not the movie you want it to be.

Although I seem to have had higher expectations than I thought, the movie is super entertaining.

Starts out fairly decent, first 30 minutes is more of a comedy than anything else. The quickly changes after that though and turns into something more in the horror territory. And that's also where the movie starts falling apart. In some aspects it works, it did have a good set-up and a decent enough cast, plus the cinematography was pretty cool and decent atmosphere but it's just the incredibly contrived writing that gets in the way. I'd rather have no reasoning than what we are given and there so many logical loopholes in the characters motives and reactions that you can go hula-hooping with them.

In 2006, a medical trial at a London hospital went terribly wrong; six young men suffered grotesque side-effects, and one needed all his toes and several fingertips amputated. Whether or not "Bloodwork" was inspired by that horrific happenstance, this one works, big time. Two students volunteer for a two week medical trial attracted by a payment of over three thousand dollars. They are led to believe this is a routine experiment developing a common or garden medicine, but of course it is not. Rather the researchers are testing a wonder drug that has magical healing properties. Suffice it to say as with the aforementioned Northwick Park trial these volunteers experience unexpected side-effects, in particular of a psychological nature. Well, perhaps not totally unexpected. When one of our heroes puts two and two together, he wants out, but the other participants are bribed to stay on, and he is falsely imprisoned. The scientist running the project is told she must expedite matters, and of course this can only make things worse."Bloodwork" has it all: drama, humour, the odd bare breast, action, morality play, science fiction and horror all rolled into one, complete with an ambiguous ending.

From the get go this movie could be either good or bad, I couldn't prevent which way it would go. Sadly it turned out to be the bad way. First, actors don't fit in their roles-- two athletic guys going to a two weeks confinement for testing an unknown drug? The main doctor, a young and beautiful girl, plays the mad scientist, which obviously doesn't fit as well. This main plot has been used plenty of times, but I believed this one could bring something new. Instead, it used some clichés, and suddenly, by 20 or 30 minutes of movie, the drug testers all became acting like pigs and addicted to the substance. Surely we all knew from the beginning it would a big conspiracy from the drug makers, but we hoped it could possibly go in a different way. I assume that after the first hour I could barely pay any attention to this, but I tried my best to try to like it. Bad movie anyways.

A bunch of people sign on for a clinical drug trial at a sealed facility. The test has some strange rules, and still stranger things happen as the test subjects begin to learn what the drug does. The story relies fundamentally on what anyone who knows anything about anthropology will tell you is some pretty pretentious (ie. flawed) science, but this is only in your face for a short monologue towards the middle of the film.I felt inclined to forgive that and other sub-par dramatic moments in favor of the quality sets, props, and cinematography, along with a multitude of nicely executed action/horror scenes sporting convincing gore and other effects that clearly were the focus of this endeavor (save for one decapitation scene that was very difficult to take seriously).Eric Roberts just provides a prop cameo. Also note the IMDb cast list (as of this review) is missing some entries, notably Tamara Feldman.
