A terrific literary drama and character piece that shows how the process of creating art can be seen differently by those doing it and those looking at it from the outside.

It’s fine. It's literally the definition of a fine movie. You’ve seen it before, you know every beat and outcome before the characters even do. Only question is how much escapism you’re looking for.

Great example of an old-fashioned, pure-at-heart escapist event movie that doesn't pretend to be anything that it's not and has boat loads of fun being its own ludicrous self.

"Last of The Dogmen" was and is the most outstanding performance Mr. Bergen has given in his career. As an audience member I really felt he WAS the character he portrayed. He has been in so many great films, but as I have watched this one 23 times, this is how I know he is great in the film and the film is great because each time is like watching for the first time, so excited and holding my breath! He makes you feel as if this is something that could happen right now today!! To me,which I know means very little, Your performance Sir, should receive the Academy Award. You are truly amazing in your career and The Father has Blessed you. Again, thank you and wish there would be part 2 of this film. God Bless. A Fan of all Your Films, Charlie

Last of the Dogmen (1995) - on AMC - It is always a treat to stumble upon a film that captures your attention for some inexplicable reason and then works its way into your heart. That's what happened today as I watched "Last of the Dogmen." There are elements that remind me a bit of "Dances with Wolves" and "Cocoon." I think the "Cocoon" part is Wilford Brimley's voice in the narration and the supernatural elements. At one point Brimley as the narrator states that faith is believing in something you can't see. If you really want to enjoy this film, then faith that anything is possible will help.Any western with Native Americans being pursued by white oppressors will always be reminiscent of many films before and after "Dances with Wolves." This film is in favor of preserving the rights of the Cheyenne to continue their heritage. Gates (Tom Berenger) and Lillian ( Barbara Hershey) have their rom-com "meet cute" when Gates seeks her help in learning more about a possible hidden Cheyenne tribe he encounters evidence of while in pursuit as a bounty hunter. Conveniently, Lillian is an anthropologist specializing in the Cheyenne culture and is also fluent in their language. In search of the possible tribe, the two main characters end up on a long and fruitful journey along with Gates' faithful dog Zip.Once with the Cheyenne, they both come to understand their ways, but conflict occurs when Gates leaves the hidden camp to return for medicine. The medicine helps seal the bond with the tribe and Gates and Lillian learn many details about the last of the Dogmen that escaped the whites over 120 winters ago and adapt to their culture. Determined to keep the Cheyenne hidden from society, Gates eventually has to part from Lillian which is tough now that they have spent many moons together. Predictably, Gates secret is discovered by his angry former father-in-law, but all is eventually set aright and, once again, the theme of faith determines how the audience will feel about the ending. While this isn't of the caliber of "Dances with Wolves," it still shows that good hearts and good people do exist, and that there are those willing to preserve the heritage of a lost nation. Overall, this can't compare, and it is in no way near as good. But if you enjoy a good western with beautiful scenery, a beautiful story, and an ending based on hope and faith that goodness will prevail, then this is a worthwhile way to spend a couple of hours.

I am a 42 years old male who's first VHS movie purchase was Terminator back in 1984. That should tell you what kind of movies I like, so when I tell you that my eyes watered up at least four times during this film please don't think of me as wimpy. When the teaser ran for this on TNT during a commercial break, I had no intention of watching it, and had intended to turn he channel. However, as I held the remote in my hand, fumbling to find the scan button, I noticed Mario Kassar in the opening credits and Carolco Films, (both instrumental in producing the first Terminator film).I am also a Tom Berringer fan as well so what the heck...I figured I would give it a chance. Five minutes into the film, I was so happy I did.I've read a lot of the other comments here, and a few have made some unfavorable remarks about Wilford Brimley's narration. I on the other hand, think that had it not been for Wilford, I may not have stayed interested. What many people don't realize about film is that if there is a lot of "back story", a narrator is typically necessary to fill in the gaps, and tie up loose ends to certain scenes.Hence, I had no qualms about Wilford's addition to the film. The only problem I did have, is at the end, he refers to himself in the first person as if he was somehow part of the story, yet it was never revealed which character he was, (a good guess would be he was the lead Deputy). As for the film itself, I found the entire cast to be believable, interesting, and lovable. As stated earlier, I was holding back tears throughout the film. By the end I was almost ready to start balling. Everything adds up. There are no loose ends, or mysterious "contrived" solutions. For example, in the first scene, a town's person tells Tom's character that his brother went into the woods years ago and never came back. So later when, Tom stumbles upon a stockpile of personal items and I.d.'s and some (Lumberjack) dynamite, of persons lost or abducted over the years by the lost tribe (in an effort to protect their way of life) there is nothing phony about it when Tom uses the dynamite to collapse a cave leading to the hidden valley where the Indian's live. It all makes for a great ending that doesn't make you go.."Yeah, right....sure" with a frown on your face. You instead cheer and weep for joy.I have not come across such a touching "Western" since Duvall and Costner's "Open Range". I also had a reminiscent thoughts of "Last of the Mohican's (Daniel Day Lewis) while watching this film, up until the point when I realize that this lost Indian tribe was more civilized than the law enforcement agency of the local town.I think the core reason this film such a great piece of art, is the irony. In the beginning, the film set me up to think there was something in the woods, almost supernatural. I was expecting to see ghosts, and Indiana Jones like spirits chasing Tom through the woods. But none of that ever happened.Once I learned that this film had something to do with Native Indians, the discovery of the Indians went from being understandably and realistically tense, to making me recall real life history of the native Indian, such as Little Bighorn, to sitting on the edge of my seat wondering if the film will end with another modern day massacre, or if everyone will come out of this alive. The growth of all the characters involved, even the dog "Zip", is astonishing, and something to admire as well. I am not kidding, even the dog had enough sense to know when he had it good. Befriending a little girl and having someone to play with, as opposed to waking up in a bar with Tom drunk out of his skull, was something cute to watch.I've babbled enough. Bottom line is...go rent or buy this flick today!

It's not that this movie is so gawdawful bad (though it is) that bothers me--it's the seven pages of insipid fawning comments that turned my stomach! Have you no taste people?!?! This movie is so lame that if it were a horse instead of the "dog" that it is, it would be taken out back and administered a mercy shot to the head. The plot is absolutely ludicrous and has more than enough holes to fill the Albert Hall to overflowing. Thankfully, this abomination sank without a trace, however, a bottom-feeding friend of mine found a VHS copy in a bargain bin for 99 cents (WAY overpriced) and sent me a copy without having viewed it himself. I can't hold that against him, but at least I can warn anyone who's reading this to save your time and money and if it's "Dog Soldiers" you want, well there's this nifty little horror film by that name directed by the same gentleman who brought us the uber-eerie "The Descent" last year. This ranks right down there along with "Caddyshack" as perhaps the worst movie I've ever wasted time on in my life, although I do have to admit that "LOTD" contained more laughs.
