A film with more than the usual spoiler issues. Talking about it in any detail feels akin to handing you a gift-wrapped present and saying, "I hope you like it -- It's a thriller about a diabolical secret experiment."

MARRIAGE Italian STYLE is a romantic comedy drama film about relationships, love and maturity. Mr. De Sica has offered us an honest and comic story about feelings between a man and a woman.A cynical and successful businessman Domenico, in flashback, recalls his wartime romance with a naive country girl Filumena. He is so enamored with her that he finances her escape from the bordello where she lives and sets her up with a good job in the restaurant that he owns, and later finds a place for her on his mother's domestic staff. She is a worker, servant and mistress at the same time. After having fallen for a younger, prettier girl and having planned to marry her, Domenico finds himself cornered when Filumena feigns illness and "on her deathbed", asks to be married to him. However, this is only the beginning of her struggle for a man who, despite everything, she loves ...This is the story of two soul mates who are trying to recognize the sincerity in their hearts. Marriage Italian Style is a melodramatic relation between a control and a desire for a harmonious family in this case. This is quite unusual, because a bizarre relationship between two complex individuals hides one great love. On the other hand, this is a vivid relationship between two crazy characters who are incessantly "swim" in their stupidity and naivety. An anxious atmosphere is poured between despair and love. Characterization is very good.Sophia Loren as Filumena Marturano is a brave, naive and somewhat eccentric woman, who can not get rid of her burden of the middle class. She fights cunningly for a "legally recognized" love and surname. Her performance is quite good, but Ms. Loren is a fascinating phenomenon. Marcello Mastroianni as Domenico Soriano is an elegant and egotistical merchant, who loves and wants to own one woman at the same time. Mr. De Sica has put, in a sort of a conflict, a petty- bourgeois character of a trader versus a rebellious nature of a semi-literate prostitute. The chemistry between the main characters is almost perfect and it is the biggest asset of this film.

Vittorio De Sica's Marriage Italian Style (1964) is really a great film. It's one of the very best, in my opinion. It is too simplistic just to mindlessly pigeonhole this fine film as a "comedy", or even as a "romantic comedy". This film, although it does seem to begin as a comedy, smoothly transitions into a compelling drama. Overall, this film transcends simple taxonomic categories because, in many ways, it successfully portrays the subtle manifold complexities of life, which defies simple categorization itself. This film has no "deep meaning", or abstract symbolisms. It is just a a fine example of compelling cinematic storytelling. And what a story it tells. It is a story of a beautiful young woman from an impoverished background who finds herself selling her own body just for economic survival. It is the story of a prostitute who actually falls in love with one of her wealthy clients, a client who superficially seems to be in love with her too, but who really can never consider her more than a human "object", bought and paid for, a human "object" who is not socially suitable for marriage because of her background. It is a story of two people finally marrying, being able to transcend the difference of social status and social ranking that has long separated them. It is a story of a mother who never abandoned her children, although circumstances conspired to keep her physically and socially distant from them for many years. It is a story of three brothers who grew up never knowing each other, finally uniting with each other, and the mother that they never knew. In short, the story told in this film is not a simple one, indeed. It is a panoramic portrayal of human life of epic proportions. This is a very detailed, and nuanced portrayal too, exposing the passions, the spirit, the foibles, the sincerities, the vanities, and the glories of human existence. Yet, for all of that, this fine filmmaker, was able, at the same time, to simply tell a very interesting and very entertaining story too. There are those today who might complain that this film is not "politically correct" because it portrays a woman who spends her life enduring the sexual exploitation, and the social domination of an indifferent and powerful man. Although this may be true, it is for this very reason that I feel that this is an important film to view even decades after it's release. That is because it is, in some ways, an historical record of the social norms, and the social attitudes of Italian society circa the 1960's, and to a certain extent accurately portrays the norms and attitudes about gender relations prevalent throughout Western Culture at that time. It is also an important film to view today because in the nuanced and extended transitional interaction between the main characters, we can see much of the man-woman relationship that is still prevalent, and still relevant today. For instance, this film believably portrays a twenty two year relationship between a couple that spans the spectrum from a prostitute-client relationship, to a boyfriend-girlfriend relationship, to a live in mistress/business associate-employer relationship, to a wife-husband relationship. Yet, the director succeeds to deliberately, and effectively "blur" the boundaries between the various stages of this long, and extended man-woman relationship. In short, the answer to the question: "When did the woman in this relationship stop being a prostitute?" is not easy to discern. More important is the question: "Did this woman ever effectively stop being this man's prostitute, even after he finally married her?" Given the social and sexual attitudes of the man in this relationship, it is justifiable to argue that this man will always, at some level, consider this woman to be his "whore", even after legitimizing their relationship through the social artifice of marriage. This whole issue brings to light an element of gender relations that is still very relevant today, that, in one way or another, a woman is coerced by society to "sell" her sexuality every day, and even in marriage just to achieve her personal goals in life. The performances by Mastroianni and Loren in this film were superb, and were enhanced by the palpable chemistry that obviously exists between them. These fine actors both gave nuanced and subtle performances that brought the complex storyline of this film to life in a way that most other actors just are not capable of doing.Overall, this film really boggles my mind when I try to reconcile how such a deep and expansive portrayal of human life can be, at the same time, just so entertaining, and just so much fun to watch. In that respect, De Sica's production here is very Shakespearean, indeed.20 Stars !!!

One of the biggest hits of the "Italian Comedy", starred by the top of the Italian star-system. De Sica give us a solid film all along the length, taking us from drama to comedy, they're separated by a faint border; as the life itself.Obviously, the time has passed and some points are old-fashioned (technical resources, technology, life's perspective) but it's true the film gets one realistic approach (it couldn't be less being this film one of the examples of Italian neo-realism) about the drama of a woman who looks for dignity and fights for the good of her children. This pink neo-realism sows us the common life of Italian people after WWII. Mediterranian country, misogyny, catholic, conservator, noisy… similar to Spain (españolada, Landismo), Greece, etc.Good performances form Mastroianni, who is a playboy but with a good heart at least, and, especially Sophia Loren, at her prime, as Filomena, a prostitute who will fight for her honesty, dignity and her sons, a woman with attitude, tough in her acts and with some real curves. In other words the best "donna", along with Magnani, in all history.De Sica, without reaching the lever of previous works in the 40's, makes a gret work in a field he controls like only a few people more. Good photography and ambiance. Music as Italian music, little cloying but it don't bother and it suits the film.Thou, there are some negative points: - Relationship with children and their reaction are unnatural and the aren't worked as it'd be necessary. - Story could be analyzed in a deeper way. It's a good topic. - Make-up of Loren at 17, she doesn't look even for a moment, her body is different, no one can't do it something about it with that clothes, but the make-up could be better. But it's a good movie, despise of these thing and the fact that is a movie made in the early 60's and other things I can't remember. You can enjoy this film and discover if you didn't make it earlier the refreshing Italian cinema.

This film was done because Sophia Loren wanted to do an interpretation of Eduardo De Filippo's play. The movie lacks the proletariat and cultured feel of the play, but rather offers a stylized interpretation of a great comedy. Loren is a fine passive aggressive actress, who portrays a woman in love and a woman in love 20 years down the line. She has great comedic timing in this role, though she doesn't have the same grit as the theatrical character is meant to. The chemistry between Loren and Mastroianni has great tension. He straddles a line between slick and comically confused. The actors and director capture the madness of love in real life. The flashbacks of their love life is captivating and builds very well. As the secrets and emotions unfold, you are drawn into the romance and tension of it all. They do not write stories like this anymore. This is original, it has heart and comedy. It is a great film to let you laugh and reflect on life.
