The best films of this genre always show a path and provide a takeaway for being a better person.
This is one of the best movies I’ve seen in a very long time. You have to go and see this on the big screen.
One of the most extraordinary films you will see this year. Take that as you want.
Exactly the movie you think it is, but not the movie you want it to be.
Father and Daughter As the title suggests, this 2000 Academy Award-winning short film revolves around a father and his daughter, the latter of which is left alone one day when her father doesn't return from sea. There's some brilliant visuals on display here, from the Lowry-esque character designs to the striking use of black and white, but it's in character and story where the film falls short. It's often hard to distinguish our main character from others in the long shots both because of her lack of distinctive design as well as lack of characterisation, meaning that the precious few minutes we spend with her are somewhat marred by confusion. In addition, I found some of the theming regarding the power of the father figure questionable, and the lack of character arc for the daughter was rather disengaging. Even so, this is a visually fantastic piece of cinema that shows the potential beauty of the animated medium.
This short movie shows the story of a father and his daughter getting apart from each other. The movie is mainly around the daughter waiting and growing up without her father. To me, it raises deep questions about life without using words but rather by playing with visual representations. For instance, we can wonder if death is not represented by this woman on a bike wearing black, but we can also guess that bikes represent mobility and lifetime. Throughout visuals a lot of issues are represented for instance loneliness, separation and so one and so forth. Beyond visuals, the simplicity of the music adds a melancholic feeling and stresses the despair of the daughter while waiting for her father. Plus, what is particularly remarkable is the impersonal dimension of the characters in the movie, that enables viewers to relate more easily to the situation and share the main feeling of separation by indirectly transposing their situation to the character's. In the same perspective, the scenario is precise but there is an absence of dialogue which enables a real freedom of interpretation to viewers regarding the story and enables them to relate. Altogether, from music to visuals, the movie is beautiful and makes viewers relate/think about human relationships in time. I would highly recommend this 8 minute movie !
Let's start with a good point of the movie. This movie, father and daughter have a simple and wonderful graphic that can be easily understood by using bittersweet cloudy mood. Although it has a colorless animation, seasonal changes are very obvious. Sunlight and shadow projected on street and tree, along with a good soundtrack that perfectly fit with the tone of the movie. Attention provided in sound effect gave a good touch in the movie (e.g. bicycle bell, wind, water ripple). I personally do not enjoy traumatize film because it makes me fall asleep. But it is a short film, I could finish watching it in 8 minutes. The love of daughter can be felt by her routine. Even it has no monologue or dialogue, the visual storytelling has been done beautifully. The pace of how story flow has been slowed down before the climax to attract an attention from the audience. However, the story could be shortened in some scene without losing any detail. There are some points in the middle of the story which I feel somehow redundant and unclear. Overall, I like the way how the movie has superb visual storytelling and sound, but it makes me want to go to bed.
I know, it seems a pathetic advise. but ,really, "Father and Daughter" is special. because it is one of the most simple animations about life becoming, scene by scene, an eulogy for life. more than a film, it is a poem. a love poem. one who remains, long time after final credits, present in yourself. like a form of remember. or remind. a father. his daughter. bicycles. a boat. and the ways to that place. and, after a time, the last meet.it is unfair to say more than see it . because it is one of films about yourself. this is my feel. or certitude. so, see it !
