I think this is a new genre that they're all sort of working their way through it and haven't got all the kinks worked out yet but it's a genre that works for me.
Instant Favorite.
I cannot think of one single thing that I would change about this film. The acting is incomparable, the directing deft, and the writing poignantly brilliant.
This is a small, humorous movie in some ways, but it has a huge heart. What a nice experience.
This movie seems promising, but it just doesnt deliver. I was hoping for a really intense female prison film; however, the only thing I got was a depressing story and low brow acting. They can't even give the actor the correct sized cello. If you like to see a girl get raped and beat in prison without a compelling story to make up for it, then this is the film for you.
This may contain spoilers. This film does have a happy ending, which comes quite suddenly, as though the makers of the movie had run out of nasty things to do to the heroine and decided that, maybe, the poor girl had suffered enough. Hard to disagree, for suffer she did. Anna was beaten up several times, sexually abused by the Warden from Day One and locked naked in solitary confinement several times before being sent to the psycho ward and given a Silence of the Lambs mask. She did get to wear nice pyjamas in the hospital wing, though - a vast improvement on the orange wear. Talking of orange, some of the inmates wore white jumpsuits. I wonder why? One important social message conveyed by the film concerns the importance of safety in the home. Drunken, abusive stepfathers need to watch where they are falling. Glass can be lethal. Also, the lecherous, corrupt warden had a voice that reminded me of the villainous J R Ewing in the great TV series, Dallas. Another lesson to be learned is that plastic trays can be a suicide risk. Giving a disturbed girl who has already threatened to kill herself this opportunity to carry out her threat is a major breach of security. I was glad she finally got the chance to play her cello in public, dressed in a nice gown and watched by her mother.
This is a film about a quite girl and an absolutely rage filled father that gets his dues by inappropriately touching her and raping her. She goes to kick him off and he flies into a window (or something) and ends up with an object embedded in his throat – not only is he dead, but the family's source of income and otherwise livelyhood is gone. Keep this in mind for the duration of the film, because her fate gets strategically worse. Not only does she not want to mix in with her fellow inmates in her new prison home, but she 'just wants to be left alone'. It doesn't work that way here, so instead, everyone wants to harass her. She eventually goes berserker and starts bullying them and beating them up. This leads to meeting the warden on numerous occasions, and he collects his due by having his way with her. Each time it gets progressively worse until he is ready to ship her down the road. A local talent show is her only hope at redemption of otherwise learning about the hardknocks of prison. I had to stop watching the movie here for a few reasons. The gang theme works, it is a prison – but it is repeated numerous times before it gets old, in fact it turns into high school rumble all over again. Several times this girl is sent to the head office to pay for whatever her current infraction is. Left untouched is the other people involved in the rumble – or perhaps it pivotal to the film. The sexuality in this film is played out a bit too much – the movie doesn't mind throwing around lesbian sex, leaving the main character naked on numerous occasions, and otherwise having two of the lead males exploit her. She's finally thrown into a mask and stretcher ala 'Hannibal' after she tries to kill herself; her will and sanity by this point is broken. She finally gets some redemption due to an upcoming talent show and we're shown her softer side – but consider this, wasn't this her entire character at the beginning of the film? Perhaps she was like this to begin with and it wasn't just the prison that did her in but made her worse – the other characters (all women) seem to be fairing far better than her, but I gather that was also because of years spent in penitentiary.Either way, this film is probably a must watch at least once. I don't necessarily recommend it, but it contains some of the most bitter and ironic scenes that are played out as such. I have never had a film stir me so much, and it might just stir you as well.Originally posted to Orion Age (http://www.orionphysics.com/?p=3588).
I watched this after watching 'Orange is not the only black', which was very enjoyable. This was not. It's not a comedy like 'Orange' largely is – but nor is it a serious film about what life is really like inside a woman's prison. If you're looking for something deep and soul searching then look elsewhere – but if you're looking for cheap thrills then this is, however, probably exactly what you're looking for. It's basically a violent soft core porn movie. The acting is AWFUL – not a single actor was in anyway credible and the fight sequences were some of the worst ever committed to celluloid. In short, if you're looking for an exploitative sex film and are prepared to put up with the most wooden acting you've ever seen then you'll have a blast.
