I think this is a new genre that they're all sort of working their way through it and haven't got all the kinks worked out yet but it's a genre that works for me.

It is not deep, but it is fun to watch. It does have a bit more of an edge to it than other similar films.

Following the child-focused "All Monsters Attack" (1969), Godzilla returns as an ally of man in the battle against pollution, as personified (kaijufied?) by Hedorah (the Smog Monster)*. There are a number of stylistic changes from previous movies in the franchise, including James Bond-like opening credits, surreal psychedelic interludes (the fish-headed people at the 'go-go' club are memorable) and a number of odd animated inserts reminiscent of early 70's public service cartoons. The musical score, much of which sounds like background music for slapstick comedy or uplifting marches similar to the grating (but catchy) Gamera theme, is horrible. The franchise is still targeting younger audiences, so the central human character is a little kid (Ken Yano, played by Hiroyuki Kawase) who, among other things, comes up with the name for the new monster (Hedorah) as well as a method to destroy it. He also seems to have a psychic bond with Godzilla, and the last scenes of the film are straight out of "Shane" (1953, except that Shane is now a giant mutated dinosaur). Despite being a child-oriented film, "Godzilla vs. Hedorah" is much grimmer than any of the previous sequels, with human body counts after the monsters clash, on-camera 'deaths' of individuals (such as the gamblers or the driver of the truck crushed by Hedorah), and most jarringly, the 'melting' of people exposed to Hedorah's noxious exhalent (Ken encounters the gruesome partially-dissolved bodies of a number of these victims). Hedorah itself is so improbable looking that it might as well be accepted as a metaphor rather than a monster, but the titular fights are pretty good. The anthropomorphisation of Godzilla, who now constantly uses human-like gestures (almost rolling his eyes at mankind's ineffectual attempts to stop Hedorah), continues (although one delirious surprise in the film is the revelation that Godzilla can fly (!), a ridiculous-looking skill that would have come in handy in previous outings). All in all, "Godzilla vs. Hedorah" (the eleventh film in the franchise) while not a great kaiju film, is eccentric, imaginative and entertaining: a deviation from the downward slide that leads to the next two entries in the series (the woeful "G. vs Gigan" and "G. vs Megalon"). (*these comments pertain to an English subtitled version of the film).

Dear God, what have they done?! Did someone take a dump on the script of this movie? Someone must have been playing a joke. This is by far the worst entry in the Godzilla series, more so than "Godzilla's Revenge", even if it does have some good qualities. What's so awfully smelly about this film? Get a trash can and find out.Hedorah the Smog Monster is an extraterrestrial organism that broke into pieces while falling down to Earth. As it reassembles itself, the creature proceeds to feed on whatever pollution or toxic substance it can get, destroying cities, killing lots of people, and going through various stages of its life cycle. Godzilla, of course, arrives to save the day. At first, Hedorah doesn't seem to be too much trouble for Godzilla in his smaller, weaker stages, but as the Smog Monster feeds on more pollution and grows bigger, not even the King of the Monsters can stop this toxic terror. With humanity stepping in to help, Godzilla sets out to make sure that Hedorah gets wasted.Speaking of which, that's how I think how the filmmakers were when they made this piece of crap: they must have been wasted. This film is like a drug-induced mind trip. It's crazy and stupid, mostly on the humans' part. There's hippies dancing around, singing the silly "Save The Earth" song, and giving up pretty easily to Hedorah's might. There's cartoon scenes too, most of which are pointless like a few other things in the film. Around this time of the series, there's annoying little kids wearing short-shorts and this one is especially irritating. Most of the music is terrible and who can forget the infamous "flying Godzilla" scene. Even the chapter on the DVD says "Something you don't see everyday." I couldn't have said it better. To be fair, there are a few good things in this movie. The battles between Godzilla and Hedorah are good, messy and brutal. Hedorah proves to be one of Godzilla's deadliest foes and he's one of my favorite monsters of the series. His theme music is the only good music in this film, both creepy and ominous, especially when you see his final form for the first time. For years, people have been saying that Hedorah is immune to Godzilla's fire breath when in reality he's not. Burned remains of the creature have been found. And if he's immune, why would he bother dodging Godzilla's fire breath or blind one of Godzilla's eyes with his acidic sludge so the Monster King can't shoot accurately? What a mess, literally! Despite the good parts, unless you're a die-hard Godzilla fan, don't bother watching this. It's not worth it.

Godzilla vs. Hedorah (a.k.a Godzilla vs. the Smog Monster) is one weird movie. It's a trippy giant monster acid trip that combines the kid-friendliness of Godzilla's Revenge (1969) with the dark, somber tone of the original Godzilla film. This strange mixture resulted in the most unique of all Godzilla adventures. I mean, c'mon. Where else do we get psychedelic rock and marching band music, poetry, cartoons, and a fish head hallucination combined with a serious warning about global pollution? And yet, of the 1970s Godzilla films, Godzilla vs. Hedorah is one of the best.Almost immediately, I knew this was going to be a different kind of Godzilla movie. With the exception of producer Tomoyuki Tanaka, none of the key players who had helped make the Godzilla films so popular in the 1960s were involved. Director Ishiro Honda was semi-retired, so the directing duties went to a newcomer, Yoshimitsu Banno. This is Banno's one and only directing credit in the Godzilla series and one can easily see why. Rumor has it that when Tanaka watched the film, he was really disappointed and told Banno that he had "ruined Godzilla." Composer Akira Ifukube was unable to score the film, so another newcomer was brought in, Riichiro Manabe. Manabe's style was completely different from Ifukube's. He opted to substitute Godzilla's magnificent theme with something that sounds like a high school marching band. Fortunately, Manabe would return to score only one more Godzilla film, Godzilla vs. Megalon (1973). Despite Banno's really odd style choices, Godzilla vs. Hedorah nevertheless could have been one of the very best Godzilla films. Imagine how much better it would be if Ifukube had scored it. Still, Godzilla vs. Hedorah was an improvement over Godzilla's Revenge. Japanese audiences seemed to think so as well as the film performed a little better at the box office. This is one of the better entries in the latter period of the Showa era.

This is the worst Godzilla movie I've seen so far. In fact, it's so bad... I've been showing friends scenes from the movie so we can laugh at it together. This movie... in all seriousness... is Godzilla vs. a s*** monster. Literally, a s*** monster. The film is supposed to give the message that we have to stop polluting the environment, or it'll kill us. The result is the s*** monster, Hedorah, which rises from human waste. The problem with this movie isn't the plot... I actually think it has a very interesting plot. The problem is the execution. The way in which the film was shot and handled was weird, goofy, and just plain ridiculous.EXAMPLESContinuous repetitive use of shots of garbage. - Hedorah's magical wonder twin powers. - Long unnecessary scenes that don't go anywhere. - Drowning Godzilla in diarrhea. - The science makes no sense, even for Godzilla. - Sulfuric acid turning people funny colors, and why does Hedorah shoot out sulfuric acid? - Random animations. - Most of the fight scenes are Godzilla and Hedorah standing across from each other making hand gestures and blinking. How riveting. - The ending just goes on... and on... and ON!!! - Just when you think it's over, a TWIST!!! That makes NO SENSE!!! - And psychedelic, early 70's Bulls***.And the ultimate WTF moment...Godzilla FLYING. This movie gets a 1. It is a grueling chore to watch, unless you skip to the most goofy scenes and make fun of them. Like Godzilla flying. Or Godzilla ripping off what I can only describe as Hedorah's testicles.I only recommend it if you want to get drunk with some buddies and play a game of MST3K home edition.
