Fun premise, good actors, bad writing. This film seemed to have potential at the beginning but it quickly devolves into a trite action film. Ultimately it's very boring.

Good films always raise compelling questions, whether the format is fiction or documentary fact.

"Sarkar" is a re-working of the Hollywood film "The Godfather". However, unlike many Indian remakes of American films, the filmmaker, Ram Gopal Varma, acknowledges this in the introduction...crediting the Copolla film for his inspiration for this movie. When the film begins, you meet Sarkar (Amitabh Bachchan). He's the local godfather but unlike the Marlon Brando version, he's basically an honest guy--less a traditional mobster and more a 'fixer' who is very powerful and works for his own moral code. However, there are two huge problems looming- -his one son, Vishnu (Kay Kay Menon) is an unstable hot-head and the other is that another mobster has decided to destroy Sarkar (Vishnu is like Sonny and Fredo from "The Godfather" combined into one character). So, after Vishnu is disowned by Sarkar for murdering an innocent man, Sarkar finds himself accused of murder...the murder of an honest politician. But the plan isn't just this...it's to murder Sarkar when he's in police custody. The only one who can stop all this and MIGHT be able to defeat Sarkar's enemies is his other son, Shankar (Amitabh Bachchan's real life son, Abishek Bachchan). In many ways this is like a modern and very sped up version of "The Godfather". While the American film was really, really long and involved, this Indian picture is amazingly short. While 3-4 hour films are the norm for Bollywood films, "Sarkar" is only two hours long...and this makes this otherwise excellent film seem a tad rushed. Still, despite this, it's an exciting and well made film that keeps you on the edge of your seat.

This a homage to the Godfather and states that right at the beginning. The film has strong elements of the Godfather and various scenes that are equal to that.Sarkar is a figure who is seen as a saviour and a gangster. He protects the poor and keeps things in balance. After rejecting a drug dealer's deal, his enemies begin to untie and plot against him in order to bring him down and they succeed. Now Sarkar's son, Subhesh must take things into his own hands as he tries to help his father. The film has the similarities as Godfather, Michaels rise. Fredo's death at the hands of his brother, the retaliation because the boss decides to say no. Enemeies reuniting, the opening scene. But the film does try to break away by showing the Indian Underworld and how things work within the film industry in Bollywood. What made me a little cautious of this film was that it was a Godfather remake and that Abhishek and Amitabh were both involved. They should keep the father and son thing out of films, just my thought. But it isn't a remake like most Bollywood films, it clearly states that and is a good Bollywood film. It has no songs..thats right! No songs to entertain, just acting. One thing that was a little irritating was the acting, some of the mob bosses were a little out of place, especially the actor playing Rasheed, yet the Kay Kay Menon who plays the bad son is a fantastic actor.Overall a good homage to a great film.

Sarkar would be a good movie for people who haven't seen The Godfather. I personally found it to be a very bad "Indian" version. The culprit?- Definitely not the actors... they've done their best. But neither the story nor the direction was actually good. Here are the major flaws in the movie- 1) The music score-... they had the guts to believe no one would realize that a major portion of it is copied from Minority Report (exact copy). N yeah... it's not put the right way either. 2) The story isn't as deep as the The Godfather. Actually... it's like as though some 15 year old guy saw the original flick, thought he understood the whole movie n then decided to make a Hindi version out of it! 3) Character personification- Director's fault again. They've tried to... make the lead characters- "deadly" (also a specific kinda music's played to make it even more evident). I cannot call this a flaw considering business, cos' most Indian viewers like/understand only this kind of stuff. 5) The chase sequence. Even that was really bad... typical bollywood sequence- more than 6 people try to shoot a single guy... n the bullets keep missing. There was this similar sequence in Company by the same director... that scene was way realistic than this!- of course, may be that's cos' even that sequence (in Company) was a complete copy of a scene in an English movie... The Assignment I think... This movie's good for some person who's not seen any good "Mafia" English move... or someone who's never seen good movies! Of course... it's not that bad... but when u compare it... it sucks!N yeah... this isn't anywhere close to Company either- that I agree... is a good flick. I think the director just wanted to make a quick buck... this certainly can't be his best effort!Sarkar's a hit- agreed... but that's how our average viewer is! N yeah... definitely better than average Hindi movies.

I have seen this movie in theater. It has been one of the all time best performance by Amitabh, Abhishek and Ram Gopal Varma as the director of this movie. RGV is always unique when it comes to screenplay. He defines his own rules. We can see Amitabh playing as Subhas Nagre. He is the God father in the city. He has been perfect in depicting his emotions through his face expressions. We have seen him earlier as an angry young man image in so many movies and now he is so natural in this new set up.I have never seen Abhishek acting so natural in any of his movies. "Yuva" is the exception. In Sarkaar, he has been superb. Earlier, he was unwilling to take his father's legacy forward. He wanted himself to keep clean. He become's his father's son when his father needed him the most. The best scene in the movie is when Abbhishek kills his traitor elder brother and comes and sits near to his father on the bed and says "Maine bhai ko maar diya". See the pain in the eyes of Amitabh. The way this scene has been filmed is just wonderful. The communication is perfect and much of the things get conveyed with the least dialogs.
