Excellent but underrated film
There are better movies of two hours length. I loved the actress'performance.
A lot of perfectly good film show their cards early, establish a unique premise and let the audience explore a topic at a leisurely pace, without much in terms of surprise. this film is not one of those films.
Like the great film, it's made with a great deal of visible affection both in front of and behind the camera.
The surprise ending wasn't so much as a surprise as what happens when you say to your self through the whole movie, I bet BLANK is going to happen, over and over. And then poof BLANK happens. What was surprising about it was the subtle way they switched from her reality to the hallucinations, and then back to reality. Some movies make it really obvious that way there is no question about weather or not it is reality. Some of the delusions seem strange and disconnected to me. Bus explosion, there's on at the crash, makes sense. I'm still confused about the girlfriend giving Kurt AIDS. And the dog in the swimming pool. I wish Uncle Phil would have had a bigger part. And it was nice to see Regina Hill in a part where she got to sound intelligent.
Perhaps the writer wrote something that made sense and just the director or final editor messed it up, but the story line and ending made no sense at all. Perhaps they thought this was abstract art or something??? It isn't art to make a complete mess and say "isn't this wonderful? Everyone can see something different" Anyone can use their imagination to visualize things in a pile of sand, rocks, grain lines in a piece of wood. Making a film like this takes no skill or talent. Of course if you think a Picasso is art, you might like this. If you think a Picasso is just a piece of junk that wealthy people with no taste listening to insane people with no minds elevated to an item of value, you will agree. The acting was excellent. To bad the director and editor had no clue what to do with it.
Danika is a study in the phases of death. Danika could see the dead. In the real world she disintegrated into madness after her husband's affair. She killed him and then killed the kids, intending to also kill herself. However, she survived physically.Mentally and spiritually, she too was dead. I found it amazing how the directors aged the children and had the family actually go through situations as if they were alive. Totally amazing. That is the part that grips you. She joined her family in death mentally and spiritually but her body was still in the real world. Parallel Universe. Cool. The film reminds me of Silent Hill. Go figure.
This movie has some depth so if your just into blood, guts, and mindless action and gore(which I love too) it may not be for you. This is a drama/Horror with a little more depth then your average horror..I have seen this movie a few times on cable and saw the screener before it came out. It took me 3 times to fully grasp everything that was going on with Danika. For those who think its only people involved in the production making good reviews, I feel sorry that you couldn't grasp this film. I have absolutely nothing to do with this film and I give it 8 stars.Marissa Tomei is still very Hot and a great actress who gave a stellar performance. Watching her come unglued emotionally on screen is very believable. She carries most of the film, but the rest of the performances are excellent too. An all around great film, good acting, cast, plot, etc for those who don't like spoon fed plots.
