It's simply great fun, a winsome film and an occasionally over-the-top luxury fantasy that never flags.

I interpreted "Da wan" ("Big Shot's Funeral" in English) as a look at the risks of China's quick conversion to capitalism. The plot is that a burnout director's proposed funeral gets given to a company to run, and the funeral becomes an advertising extravaganza. Along with that there's also the look at Hollywood's abandoning of its aging people, and obsession with remakes.Although this movie is a comedy, it's more of a subtle comedy. It's not a black comedy, but don't expect any slapstick humor. It reminded me a bit of the comedy-drama "Get Low", in which an old man wants to have a living funeral so that people can say whatever they've wanted to about him. A lot of the humor derives from the constant need for an interpreter, and I'm someone who always who likes hearing different languages spoken. This won't be a movie for everyone, but I liked it. Donald Sutherland puts on a great performance as the ailing director. But mostly, the movie's a satire on advertising. Really good.

First, I enjoyed the movie. It's funny. It's farce. Go in with low expectations and come out with a few good chuckles. It's tasteful and it's not the Asian cinema generally imported to our Western sensibilities. No martial arts. No hot chicks with swords. But it's a very clever comment on Buddhism's own problems with financial corruption and a nod to foreign filmmakers' influence on us westerners.Second, why does this site say "If you like this, you'll like....The Last Emperor"??? It is EXACTLY like the Last Emperor....except the Last Emperor is TOTALLY DIFFERENT.But hey, good news, if you like Lucy Liu, you may think I'm her.

As someone already said, you cannot totally appreciate it if you're not Chinese, as many materials need knowledge of Chinese culture, current status of the capitalizing China, and of course, Chinese language. If you translate a comedian's jokes into another language, even the translation is perpect (I highly doubt how that can be done), will the audiance in another language laugh as hard as you do? In most cases, they just don't get it. When I watch the "Friends", I cannot get some jokes although I understand what they said literally. If you know the craziness in China of making big money just by doing (in many cases, misleading or even cheating) advertisements, by imitating famous brands, not to say by pirate copying, then you'll understand more of the point of this movie.

Dear movie fans,if you are not Chinese, please ask Chinese for the reason why they like to watch it.In China, this movie is for the celebration of the New Year 2003, when a lot of people will go to the cinema, so it is a comedy for sure. And it satirizes a phenomenon that in China only bragging could take attention of people, and then make big money, so some people takes advantage of the funeral of the big shot to advertise. That's a movie for laugh and think when you leave the cinema, almost everyone in China talked about it at that time,Thanks.
