Gripping story with well-crafted characters
Good films always raise compelling questions, whether the format is fiction or documentary fact.
Very good movie overall, highly recommended. Most of the negative reviews don't have any merit and are all pollitically based. Give this movie a chance at least, and it might give you a different perspective.
This review is for the Hong Kong version, and NOT the cut American one. I saw this a few years ago, and remembered enjoying it, but it was the Dimension version. I love Jackie Chan, so I felt like revisiting it. This is basically a quickie project for Jackie Chan. Too often does this movie alternate between heavy drama, and comedy, failing to find the proper medium like other successful Jackie Chan films. It starts off rather decently. We get one of Jackie's patented breathtaking stunts involving Jackie being on a huge crane as it collides with a tall building, which was pretty impressive. Then it bogs down into major tedium with a convoluted plot that failed to engage my interest. Another problem with Accidental Spy is, other than Jackie Chan, the characters are downright uninteresting. Even Jackie Chan isn't as interesting as he usually is. He does have a couple of great stunts, as I mentioned somewhat up above in the review, but this is not up to his usual standards. He seems unsure how to take on this diverse role, not that I blame him. It's a bit of a messy film. The finale pours on the action, and it revitalized my interest a little bit. Jackie takes on a truck to chase after the baddies, and it was actually pretty exciting, with a memorable stunt at the very end. But it was too little, too late for meNote: Keep the movie on after the end to see Jackie's stunt outtakes. They are always amusing to watchBottom line: This was rather mundane for me. I must have been really naive to enjoy this movie originally, considering it was the U.S Dimension version! This film is too convoluted and dull for its own good, with action here and there. Worth a watch once for big Jackie Chan fans, but that's about it. It's nothing special 5/10
Apparently there are two versions of "The Accidental Spy" in circulation, the most commonly found cut one (which runs about 90 minutes) and the harder to find long one (which runs about 110 minutes). This certainly offers a reasonable explanation as to why the plot of this movie in its cut form seems so disjointed. But it does not fully explain why it is so dull. The tone swings wildly from light spy comedy to serious spy drama - the movie never seems sure of itself. The fighting is unremarkable if you've seen any of Jackie's previous outings, and some of the action scenes have a "been there, done that" feel to them. The climactic "Speed"-like sequence of a tanker that must not slow down or it will explode is spectacular, but has nothing to do with the main plot. On the bright side, there is at least one amazing stunt (Jackie jumping from the roof of a building to the road below using three umbrellas as parachutes!), there is a nice international flavor (the locations include Hong Kong, Seoul and Istanbul), there are two pretty Chinese women, and of course there is always Jackie. (**)
I had heard good things about this movie and was very psyched to check it out as I love Chan's easy going humour and mad fighting styles. But as I saw it I got more and more frustrated - where were the people on the cover and where were the jets and parachute people? Silly as it is with things on the cover that aren't in the film, the dubbing is utterly painful - totally out of synch - and when the story is as fragmented as is the case in the version I saw, one has to wonder if the dubbing missed out things, or if the Danish version has been cut, because the storyline is pretty much impossible to understand.Jackie has some good moves and there are a couple of very pretty gels to look at for a few moments, but that is about the qualities that are to be found in this movie. The storyline in the Danish release is impossible to understand for anyone with a normal IQ, as is the character progression, and the quality of the effects are below par for what can be expected. All in all this version is a sorely disappointing flick and not one that can be recommended, unless you are a hardcore Jackie Chan fan.4/10
I never understood professional critics of Jacky Chan's movies. I really think it should be ignored. Instead it should be relied on his fans like myself. I just can't understand the relatively high critics for his 'New Police Story' comparing to this one. Accidental Spy is a good refreshment after his American movies like 'Rush Hour' and 'Shanghai Noon', which are fine by themselves but quite low by Jackie's standards. They lack the little stupid things that make Jackie Chan's movie funny, and they surely lack his amazing stunts.Accidental Spy is a very funny film, having a lot of Jackie's nonsense in it. The pace is good and the stunts are incredible. Bringing us back to his Asian movies from the second half of the 90's. Accidental Spy is also has high budget and looks good. Accidental Spy has some drawbacks also ( of course comparing to his other movies and not to Oscar like one's). Unlike his other movies, where the plot is straight and simple, here the plot is a bit complicated and has unnecessary twists. This doesn't come along good with nonsense he brings to the movie. The fight choreography is also visually not as compelling as in his other movies.Overall - not typical Jackie movie in terms of plot but all the other is alike and his fans won't be disappointed. And this is much better then his later work like 'Toexido' , 'Medallion' or 'New Police Story'.
