Very disappointing...
The Age of Commercialism
Not sure how, but this is easily one of the best movies all summer. Multiple levels of funny, never takes itself seriously, super colorful, and creative.
The film never slows down or bores, plunging from one harrowing sequence to the next.
It had me at hello. I really liked this movie. The female lead was outstanding. She was so talented, had many layers of complexity and acted the part so well. She really drove the story. The male lead was believable. He's just brilliant, the way he effortlessly plays this geeky sort of loner guy who just doesn't want to be alone on New Years Eve. His transformation is believable and you're just rooting for him the whole way through. The best friend reminds me of a young John Cusack. His proposal was so touching, even though his girlfriend didn't deserve it. The story line was simply perfection. It kept me enthralled. It was just a really good movie, in my opinion. I would definitely recommend this.
Just saw this on BBC at around 1am, what a find. Gentle and romantic and beautifully shot this is a wonderful film about love and the way it can chew you up. Superb performances from the leads;Sara Simmonds and Scoot McNairy and LA itself. There are parallels to Before Sunrise(same production team)but where I found that film's characters unlikable I really felt for Vivian and Wilson. Left me feeling maudlin in the way Brief Encounter does which is no bad thing.I just really loved it. I know that's not a great justification but it's that sort of film; it'll creep up on you and you'll love it without knowing. Sort of like love itself really.Would love to see some sort of follow up.
This movie grows on you, so I recommend that you give it a chance. You may well find yourself initially annoyed by the main characters, but after a while they become sympathetic and even, in their own way, heroic. The main female character especially has more depth and insight than you might credit her with having on your first impression. The dialogue is good, as is the acting, and the plot turns are surprising. The scene that takes place in an old movie theater reveals the beauty of a bygone era. The couple in the supporting role bring their own complications and thereby add to the drama and fun. Altogether, an engaging movie.
I'm not going to go through what the movie is all about as others will do that far better, I only wish to describe the excellent Photography in the movie. It's a contrasty Black and White movie but if you read the reviews many don't even mention this or actually enjoy the B&W medium. The Director has used every trick in the still photographers book to direct your eye where he wants them by the use of background lines / settings and / or a myriad of other best practices . As the camera is constantly on the 2 leads, this therefore makes the movie really about 2 people and luckily the actors are great so the movie works really well.If you watch it with a photographers head on then it's all a little bit over the top BUT at the end of the day the B&W and his settings along with the urban environment adds to the film.( also the actual photography portion in the film as the Director semi parodies himself.) The Director has made this contrasty film work well – Watch it for scenes and the touching story ( and the backgrounds ) - It's great.Give yourself a treat and simply watch all the scenes to see how to use the backgrounds to best effect.Any still B&W Photographer will appreciate this film..
