Very very predictable, including the post credit scene !!!
The film makes a home in your brain and the only cure is to see it again.
This is a small, humorous movie in some ways, but it has a huge heart. What a nice experience.
It is neither dumb nor smart enough to be fun, and spends way too much time with its boring human characters.
For all intents and purposes, The fields presents itself as a farm style horrorflick.... it's NOT! The movie starts out with no lead in to these characters so that you can care about them or even know their motivation, but here's a little boy watching a dad point a gun at his mother's head! The mom has the cops come, the dad's not arrested because apparently the sheriff is the mothers farther??? That's convenient, and mom's having a talk with her mom about where she's going to send her son until they straighten things out... to the father's parents, because at least there she doesn't have to worry about him being touched inappropriately! WAIT..WHAT?!?!Her dad's the sheriff.. this movie just started... what is going on please?!?! And that's the tone of the whole movie, there's TONS of filler, and then they drop bombs almost in whispers, like they don't matter, and that was never brought up again! They sent him to his Dad parents farm, where his fear of the things he's hearing and seeing about the Manson family on tv and radio is being backed up by insane hippie drifters whacked out on SOMETHING who are terrorizing the family, and likely? Stole and killed the 2 family dogs and a young woman, whose body the boy finds in the corn fields. Gramps keeps having what looks like heart attacks during these nights of terror, but no one thinks to check him out, or take him to the hospital... the hippies seem to be led by a helper on a milk farm next door who creeps out the kid, we don't know why but he seems to know a lot about the kid and be friendly with him at first, then all of a sudden the kid freaks out on him! The whole thing, and ESPECIALLY the ending is just BIZARRE... it leaves you wondering "What did I just watch?" And in the end they just wrapped up the pieces, but honestly I'm not sure i understood what happened. The kid made the movie, everyone else's acting was AWFUL .. the cinematography was beautiful, and there was enough to keep me there once I started watching, I just wish I hadn't started!
This movie was scaring the crap out of me for the first 3/4 of the movie. Think Children of the Corn with the most creepy building atmospheric music you have ever heard, until you are cringing on the edge of the couch KNOWING you will have nightmares....And then it's all crap. The movie has no monsters in it. No aliens in the corn, like Signs. No Children of the Corn psycho devil kids. There's maybe a hint of a loose gang of hippie chick Manson groupie wanna-bes.The most that's done is windows are broken.I was expecting a major climax, and no, no such thing. Instead, the maybe-psycho hangs himself, after throwing some rocks through windows. That's it, roll credits.Cloris is adorable and easily the best character. Think Malcolm in the Middle Grandma with a wicked nasty biker mouth on her. HILARIOUS!!! That's the only point, plus the creepy music, to bother watching, which I did on Netflix.
What appears to be the dichotomy between the positive and negative reviews with regards to "The Fields" is that you have those looking for "scare the crap out of me!" horror and those that see this film is truly full of horror elements. It is not dull, boring, nor uneventful. In fact there are many different things going on here in this period piece that is very well executed and is highly worth viewing, in my (and many others') opinion. We know that film reviews are subjective: not everyone is going to like the same thing, this goes without saying. The Fields really covers so much ground and truly disturbing yet also interesting and "good" moments that it would be very unfortunate that one would not watch it based on some poor reviews. Be wary of those telling you not to waste your time. I almost heeded their words and would have missed out on this complex and realistic gem.
A movie like no other....Something mundane happens to somebody platitudinous. It goes on for a bit, then it stops. You'll yawn. You'll blink. You'll wonder what Redbox did with your $1.28. The complete and total absence of action is over shadowed only by the loosely grouped events that struggle to make up a plot. The best thing that can be said for this movie is that the Director and Producers of "The English Patient" rejoiced and threw a party when it was learned their movie was no longer the single most boring piece of cinematic doldrums ever conceived. Perhaps the best review of this movie came from Leo Tolstoy, who upon viewing it said, "My God, does this EVER end?"
