Excellent but underrated film
Although it has its amusing moments, in eneral the plot does not convince.
The plot isn't so bad, but the pace of storytelling is too slow which makes people bored. Certain moments are so obvious and unnecessary for the main plot. I would've fast-forwarded those moments if it was an online streaming. The ending looks like implying a sequel, not sure if this movie will get one
Through painfully honest and emotional moments, the movie becomes irresistibly relatable
My favorite movie on the life of Christ has always been "Jesus Of Nazareth", a miniseries from 1977, starring Robert Powell as Jesus. "The Gospel Of John", however, comes in a VERY close second. It is absolutely stunning! The fact that all the dialog was word for word from Scripture, makes it all the more impressive. Where most biblical movies are concerned with adding scenes that aren't in the Bible, for dramatic purposes, the makers of this film saw no need for that, and let the words of the Gospel speak for themselves. Henry Ian Cusick, an actor from Peru, does an incredible job portraying Jesus. You can feel exactly how he feels in every scene. When he's righteously indignant at the moneychangers, that came through on the screen, and I felt it. At the raising of Lazarus, you can see the sadness on his face, because of the loss of his friend, and the unbelief of those around him. That hit me like a ton of bricks. And, when he's being crucified, if it doesn't start the tears flowing, something is wrong with you. Also, as narrator, Christopher Plummer does a good job. If you haven't seen this movie, I highly recommend it...It's near perfect.
When I first started watching this video, I was first disappointed in the translation choice. That might seem strange to some, but I prefer the NASB as a generally more reliable translation (though not completely, of course).Only because this Gospel movie was clearly better than any other I've even seen, I wanted to write a short review. It was interesting because I don't even like the translation from which it comes, yet the dialog was captivating to me and so much more powerful than other gospel movies that it's exceptional and very realistic. It stands out to me every time I watch it.If you love the Scriptures but have always been disappointed in Bible movies, I think you'll find this a remarkable exception, even if you think the King James Version is the language in which God speaks. ;-)
Without doubt this is to date the best movie ever made. It's true to the actual gospel (sadly though the good news version of the gospel), the acting's phenomenal and not overly spiritual or out of this world. Natural reactions, realistic setting and a "more than average" accuracy in terms of the portrayal of Characters. The best, most moving film I have ever seen. The Passion of the Christ is complete crap in comparison. The DVD version even allows you to go through chapters of the gospel, so one can read a chapter and watch the same chapter on screen every day. A fun- filled way to take in the wonderful book of John. I would recommend it to young and all, simple and intellectual. Great gift, awesome soul-winning tool and a masterpiece of a production. A must watch!
This is a very, very faithful adaptation of the Gospel of John, including every scene from the book with the same dialog, etc. The actors do a great job, and the direction was wonderful. The music also was very good, and the whole thing was just beautiful to watch. However, the faithfulness to the Gospel, while a good thing (its faithfulness helped enable it to skip the controversy that "The Passion" generated), caused a few problems near the end. First, in the book of John, Jesus preaches to his disciples for about 3 chapters during the Last Supper. Let me tell you, that part of the movie was BORING, and seemed to stretch on for nearly half an hour. It was like listening to a sermon--it would have been interesting in church, but had no place in a movie. And the Gospel of John doesn't have as much about the crucification as the other books, so that part of the film was disappointingly anticlimactic. But, all in all, the film was wonderful to watch.
