Excellent but underrated film
There's no way I can possibly love it entirely but I just think its ridiculously bad, but enjoyable at the same time.
It is an exhilarating, distressing, funny and profound film, with one of the more memorable film scores in years,
The film never slows down or bores, plunging from one harrowing sequence to the next.
I am really amazed how little fame this film had. i think it has to do with distribution companies and etc.Don't be idiots - if you are looking for a good fun take this movie - this is very nice movie to pass few hours with and the music is GREAT.It's about ..... well girls and boys and whats between them with not too much story but not all movies should be PULP FICTION should they?? it's nice and cute and gives good time . The girls are also very good looking and this makes the whole movie even more enjoyable. Why i gave it only a 9? well the story could be little more convincing from the middle and on. in some point you start to see events that are little less reliable. SMALL SPOILER: The baby is crying and the father goes in and tries to relax him. now i am not talking about some small cry but- no - hysteric cry and 30 sec after that the father goes out and "baby is sleeping"- excuse me , when and how exactly did you make him calm and sleep and be able to leave his room in 20-30 seconds. but ignore this kind of small picking because the film itself is not Docudrama - it's fun and this should be overlooked.
Is it possible to enjoy a film with mediocre performances, weak script and an irregular tone, only for the atmosphere it brings? In the case of mine with the film These girls, the answer is yes but I do not think much people will have my bizarre obsession for Canadian movies. If it wold not be for the presence of not so much known actors(David Boreanz appeared on the series Angel and Caroline Dhavernas appeared on Wonderfalls),These girls is a film made by aficionados because of its limited production and some things seem improvised. The film has an absence of narrative focus and that's a good decision because it does not have predictable dramatic arks on its characters.I enjoyed a little These girls but not because it has good elements as a movie.I enjoyed it because it has that typical Canadian ''touch''.As a comedy,it's too simple;as a drama it is very irregular;but as a portrait of a little Canadian community,it's fun and it's not pretentious.
Tanya! What a kind and wonderful message you posted - thank you! I hope you enjoy the film - it certainly is a romp for me! Your portrayal of Caroline remains an inspiration - you gave her such a good "kick" in the Ottawa production - really focused her and brought into her own. I will always appreciate you for that.A note - her role and rationale has been modified for the film version - she's now "Keira" - but her wry humor that you really woke me to in your performance, and that I tried to capture in the subsequent draft for the Calgary production at One Yellow Rabbit, has absolutely made it all the way to big screen.Right On, Tanya! Hope all is well with you, Viv
I was in the play These Girls in Ottawa at Art's Court back in 1999 and had the pleasure of working with Vivienne Laxdal on the production. I would just like to say how delighted I am that her work was made into a movie. I loved playing Caroline.. who i believe is now Kiara.... she had such a great story around her. I must say it was probably the best play I have ever had the pleasure to be involved with, thanks in part to playing such a great character and also in having the wonderful words of encouragement from Vivienne at rehearsals, who is also an accomplished actress. I can not wait to see this movie, if they have kept close to the play it is sure to be a riot!
