It's entirely possible that sending the audience out feeling lousy was intentional

It was OK. I don't see why everyone loves it so much. It wasn't very smart or deep or well-directed.

All of these films share one commonality, that being a kind of emotional center that humanizes a cast of monsters.

Beautiful. The director Mr. Villaça, has a little gem here. It is some time I see a Brazilian movie that moves me. This one takes to a little trip around on of the biggest cities of the world: Sao Paulo while showing you the little relationship trouble between Ana Lucia and Fabio. Like other couples in good romantic movies, you also easily fall in love with them and you see yourself following their steps between rooms, buildings, streets and different boroughs making a parallel with the city's landscape ever changing with the characters' growing and changing. New buildings and demolition, new ideas and expiration of others. The lyricism is present throughout: in the locations, in the set decoration, cinematography. The original score and soundtrack created especially for the movie permeates, creating the right atmosphere for the scenes. There is also a group of characters spread in between scenes that brings a look on big cities' life and it gave the director a chance to bring to the big screen icons of acting in the Brazilian performance and arts. Looking on movie-making as an entertainment that brings art and culture for the masses, this movie is a "must see" for viewers, cinema students and mainly for directors, since it brings lyricism, beauty, and thoughtfulness while entertaining. It is a shame that Brazilian film marketing is that awful. If this movie were produced and marketed by American executives of marketing, it could have turned to be another romantic movie hit like Sleepless in Seattle. The actress Denise Fraga is great but she has performed similar characters before. Now Domingos Montagner(Montanhér because the name is from Italian origin) shows his mastery on acting by creating this singular character. Fabio is a professional man who has no problems falling in love and showing how delicate a grown man can be when his heart is broken. Unfortunately, when I write this review is some weeks after this phenomenal actor has passed away in a drowning accident in one of the biggest rivers in Brazil, in between his shooting of another work. I would compare Mr. Montagner work with Robert DeNiro's acting. All the other aspects of filmmaking are also superb: cinematography, costumes, set locations and decorations, make up, lighting, editing, etc.
