Let's be realistic.
A Major Disappointment
The acting in this movie is really good.
The basis of the film is off of two protagonist a writer and an actor, female and male respectively. However to call the actor a protagonist may be an exaggeration as the narrative is driven heavily forward by the female/writer leaving the actor to some what like just a supportive medium. The begining is slow and the narrative is lackful yet purposefully or accidentally the viewer is still engaged with the melodramatics of the newly wed couple. The acting is not a masterclass but is complimentary to the film itself and provides an almost intermediate vibe about the film. The narrative and development is somewhat underwhelming with many key focus points simply being brushed over with lack of attention, scenes which seemed focused on do little to leave an impact as the next scene rushes in. Overall the film is nothing spectacular and could be described as nothing more than underwhelming, however the potential for it to be an innovation in the romance/drama genre is ever present. A greater focus on key scenes and further character development of everybody apart from the female lead would of likely benefited this film paramount.
I gave it a 7, my feeling was to give it a 5, not because the acting was bad, not because the directing was bad, on the contrary, acting, directing was good, but because, having been in 2 marriages which ended, first one after 22 months due to her indiscretion and the second one lasted 21 years and again, due to her indiscretion with a work colleagues, ended. So... If you are newly married or contemplating marriage, then watch this and LEARN! This movie is about a lesson in fidelity or infidelity, of seriously knowing exactly what both parties want out of life. If you have split, then don't watch it because all it will do is remind you of the hurt, the disappointment, the sadness of an ending.
Young newlyweds encounter a series of challenges during the first year of their marriage. I do admire the story that this film tries to send about the every day struggles of young couples and how easily they can be seduced unfortunately 'Paper Year' did not transfered that good on screen. The actors do an alright job with the script that was handed to them but they could have done better i'm sure of that plus fans of Andie MacDowell will definitely be disappointed since her screen time is limited in about 4 to 5 minutes which i found it to be very disappointing considering the fact of how good of an actress she is. Overall a really disappointing romance drama about love and cheating. (4/10)
This is a good addition to the romantic comedy genre though the movie is less of a comedy movie. Its a story between a young couple and the happenings in the first year of marriage.Anyone young thinking about getting into a relationship should watch this movie as this movie serves as a good cautionary. The actors do justice to the script and make the movie interesting and entertaining. The director has an interesting point of view which makes the movie a worthy watch.
