Obituary for Escobar

Serbian crime drama focusing on Belgrade's violent criminal underworld. Obituary For Escobar distinguishes itself from other recent crime dramas with its strong visual style and energetic approach. Borko was a young effeminate boy bullied at school by the self-styled 'Ghandi'. Years on, Ghandi is now a warlord, wrecking mayhem in pursuit of his ambition to become the leading drug lord in the Balkans. His execution of the rival 'Serbian Escobar' coincides with the mysterious placement of an obituary for the real Escobar by two stoners. In Ghandi's pursuit of the assailants he meets Lela, a stunning mystery woman who leads Ghandi to reconsider both "Borko" and his life in crime.

I think this is a new genre that they're all sort of working their way through it and haven't got all the kinks worked out yet but it's a genre that works for me.

Good films always raise compelling questions, whether the format is fiction or documentary fact.

Not sure how, but this is easily one of the best movies all summer. Multiple levels of funny, never takes itself seriously, super colorful, and creative.

It's easily one of the freshest, sharpest and most enjoyable films of this year.

There're only a couple of things to praise here: the Croatian chick did a fine job playing a Belgrade babe, accent and all (the same can't be said for baldy Bitorajac who tried to compensate by overacting ridiculously, though his saving grace might be that the role was tiny anyway), and Marko Zivic provided some decent enough comic relief as the jester of this criminal clan.On the other end of the quality spectrum, well, even listing this movie's foibles is an exercise in futility as the filmmakers clearly aimed for a spoonful of cheap entertainment, so I'll pretty much stop right here. Suffice it to say, various plot points are preposterously contrived and, predictably, that special brand of lazy/cheap/dumb-ass urban humour that's fast becoming a staple of recent Serbian cinema rears its ugly head again. Also, the fact "Citulja za Eskobara" came from the recently established Pink's film division is very noticeable as that special aura of noxious Pink jenesequis fills the air in more than a few scenes. For the uninitiated out there, Pink is a media conglomerate that makes most of its dough via a trashy Balkans-wide TV network showing yucky reality shows and banal talk & variety programmes with plenty of tits & ass.PS: I didn't really have an idea what to expect from the film based on the trailer or the promos, and it's just as well 'cause had I known beforehand about its basic premise of a twenty-something girlie dude who surgically transforms into a hot babe and then decides to seek revenge on his former elementary school tormentor (who in the meantime has become a mafia boss) by making him fall in love with his new exterior.... well, put it this way, coupled with the fact that this is a Pink production...I'd have ran for the hills. In the end, I guess the best I can come up with about "Citulja za Eskobara" is that it's not as bad as its summary sounds.

When you see the name of Zeljko Mitorvic as producer of the film, you can start yourself asking is this movie worth watching. Anyway, besides that fact that brings nothing good, movie itself have couple of good and funny moments, but if you watched ''Mi Nismo Andjeli'', ''Rane'', ''Dve Palme za Bitange i Ribicu'', you will catch all of the ''seen-before'' gags. Storyline is mainly shallow and holes in the story are to much visible, and goal of the film is unfinished and messy. Acting tough, is good, even if Vojin Cetkovic isn't good choice for mob boss, as his character gain more village boy profile than notorious killer and mobster, what you wouldn't say for Marko Zivic as he acts very effective. Considering camera shooting, effects and design, movie can pass, but when you put it all together it's obvious that this is the movie for home-video market, not for theaters and such. Funny for moments, but easy to be forgotten.

This is a great film! Finally a Serbian film that is not made for conquering the world but for audience in the cinemas... Great plot and subplots, interesting and very funny, great portraits of characters who build the base of the movie, even tough the main story is said to be true and really is a good idea for a movie. It will probably be years before people will recognize the values of this "Godfellas" like film, that we had not had a chance to see yet. I like the fact that the director didn't waist precious film time to involve some of the actual problems of our time, which many directors put in their film, probably just to get money from some very worried NGOs... I have really enjoyed. Every shot is just as it is supposed to be considering the information and the meaning it carries... Funny and smart! Great!
