As WWII progressed the lighting was developed in to a wide range of roles - ground attack, escort fighter, reconnaissance and even glider tow. This story has more twists and turns than a second-rate soap opera.
While it is a pity that the story wasn't told with more visual finesse, this is trivial compared to our real-world problems. It takes a good movie to put that into perspective.
