That was an excellent one.
Overrated and overhyped
The movie's neither hopeful in contrived ways, nor hopeless in different contrived ways. Somehow it manages to be wonderful
A terrific literary drama and character piece that shows how the process of creating art can be seen differently by those doing it and those looking at it from the outside.
I wonder if it's just me, because lately most Malayalam movies that come out (or I come across) have heavily corny acting and I think Charlie was a perfect example of this phenomenon. Great cast, cinematography and direction, but the acting, dialogues and story line pushed the authenticity of the movie way too far and questionable. The protagonist, Charlie (played by Dulquer Salmaan), supplies a fair amount of suspension of disbelief and cringe to the viewer in every single scene he's in. Charlie's a wanderlust do-gooder, somewhat like an overenthusiastic male version of Amélie Poulain (from Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain -2001), who's motto is to live-free spirited and do random acts of kindness throughout his life journey . In the end it all looked like here's these two young people, who so badly want to seem 'cool' and 'free-spirited' and try too hard, way too hard to look that way. I really like Parvathy as a public figure and admire her courage to express solidarity with her fellow actress who became victim to sexual assault by men in the industry. I also used to love Parvathy's acting in her previous movies, especially in Poo (2008) and Take Off (2017). However, with all said, it was a real bummer to see her character falling apart like this in Charlie. On the contrary, Aparna Gopinath plays her role (which isn't a leading one) in way more impressionable and realistic manner and every now and then her role helps the viewer to get a grip back to reality in this conceptually corny yet visually beautiful mess. I hope the trend of corny acting and storytelling dies out soon in Malayalam cinema and we get renaissance in the industry where film makers seek to create content that's technologically empowered as well as conceptually authentic, like in the times of Bharathan, Padmarajan, K. G. George etc. (fingers crossed)
Charlie is a feel-good movie, but it does not stop there. It plays around brilliantly with raw emotions centered around a character.
Dear Martin Parakkat,Have you heard the famous quote by Robert Crumb? It goes like this - YOUR VIGOR FOR LIFE APPALLS ME! This is what I was thinking when the idiotic and irritating Charlie (played by a shrieking Dulqer Salman) went around interfering in people's lives, preventing them from committing suicide and inspiring an overpopulated country like India to live on. How about a movie where the hero goes around inspiring people to commit suicide? Hohoho! I liked the fact that you had a character speaking against the alcohol prohibition in Kerala. And you made a Muslim character eat pork Vindaloo. Big deal! And then you showed off noisy Christian and Hindu festivals as exotica. What the hell were you thinking when you wrote that magician scene set during the Thrissur Pooram? Jeez man, that scene made me cringe.Your visual style reminded me of Emir Kusturica films. I did like the fight scene where Charlie beats up the pervert and the pimp. That was very well done. And Parvathy Menon was quite irritating with the whole Arundhati Roy vibe. If it weren't for the loud background score and colorful visuals, the audience would be unable to tolerate the likes of non-actors like Parvathy Menon and Dulqer Salman.Anyway, the movie hall was almost full in the third week when I watched it. I guess you guys made a lot of money. I guess you're here to stay. Looks like I would have to spend a good part of my adult life watching films made by you and starring Dulqer and Parvathi. It is a chilling thought.Best Regards,Pimpin.
Charliee...ONe of the most expected Malayalam movies of 2015. Its a fact that people were expecting so much out of Charlie..From the costumes and first look poster of Charlie, all were expecting something like the Nivin Poly starer "Premam", or something like that. And its due to this reason, people are not ready to accept the fact that Charlie is a good movie. Movies are always not about, mass entertainment, comedy or tragedy. As I said in the title..Charlie is a feel good movie where, peace, excitement, optimism and moreover..love is promoted. The character portrayed by Dulquer Salman , is the soul of the movie. Undoubtedly its DQ's best performance till date and shows complete confidence and screen presence in the movie. He is of the opinion that..We have to live out our life happily forever. He is ready to turn the sorrows of many people in to happiness...or he is ready to turn the hopes of the people in to a reality. The character played by Parvathy Menon.."Tessa" is in search of Charlie all throughout the movie..She knows Charlie well from all the people who came across Charlie and she gradually falls in love with "that idea of being with 'Charlie'". The credit goes to Martin Prakkat, who has shown extreme skills of craftsmanship in building such a wonderful and joyful movie. I have been noticing many in the social media..trying to degrade the movie. Its a different sort of movie..put in front of Malayali community. Try to see the movie as a feel good movie and please do not expect a "premam" or "moideen" out of it. Its the best Malayalam movie for me in 2015..and I am ready to watch it again and again... And fellow readers..please do not encourage the degradation of such a wonderful movie. If done so..Charlie will turn itself in to one of the most under-rated Malayalam movies...
