Wonderful Movie
Pretty good movie overall. First half was nothing special but it got better as it went along.
Yo, there's no way for me to review this film without saying, take your *insert ethnicity + "ass" here* to see this film, like now. You have to see it in order to know what you're really messing with.
what a terribly boring film. I'm sorry but this is absolutely not deserving of best picture and will be forgotten quickly. Entertaining and engaging cinema? No. Nothing performances with flat faces and mistaking silence for subtlety.
Why would you want to watch a 1989 movie ?The scenario is pure Bollywood : brothers torn apart by values, sacrifice and family, a damsel in distress critical of the hero's actions, a pure evil villain and flashbacks to when all the movies major characters are hungry pitiable children. The tone is melodramatic(standard by old Bollywood standards) and the songs and their videos are typical of the time.Since childhood elder brother Kishen(Jackie Shroff) leads a life of crime under Anna(Nana Patekar) to support younger brother Karan(Anil Kapoor) but Karan does not know this. The occurrence of a series of events, anymore would be a spoiler, creates an idealist Karan versus merciless don Anna plot with Kishen torn between these two sides. The problem with most crime films is they tend to be too cold while dramas tend to drag on and lack a gripping plot. In this film, however, the crime and drama elements are well integrated and well paced, this overcoming the liabilities of either genre.Despite being a quarter century old technically it is still impressive. The cinematography is done thoughtfully and painstakingly. The background score is fitting. It even won a national award for editing. All of this is topped by great performances from Nana Patekar(National Award) and Jackie Shroff and by the old school eye candy i.e. Madhuri Dixit.Unlike the recent Vidhu Vinod Chopra movies i have seen(3 Idiots, Munna Bhai) it does not carry a direct message or say that this or that is right. Instead it presents the protagonist with a conflict, even the audience cant solve, like all fiction is supposed to do.(a theme is explored better by dialogue then by a lecture isn't it?)For a modern day viewer the acting and dialogue may be over the top and for the impatient a few scenes too slow. So, why would you want to watch a 1989 movie ? because it is a masterpiece. It is not special because of anything new or different it did but because it the perfection of the genre: Bollywood . A true Classic.
A brilliant, dark movie which got full justice from the acting of the great Nana Patekar. A gripping plot, an eerie background score from the great R.D Burman and to top it off, Nana Patekar delivering one of his finest performances. Although Nana has given many memorable movies, this to me alongside Yugpurush is his finest acting effort. His dialogue delivery is immaculate and so is portrayal of narcissistic killer. Jackie Shroff, whom i feel is a brilliant actor himself also performs marvellously. Anil Kapoor was decent and this was by no means his finest performance. For that one will have to see "Saheb" or "Ram Lahkhan". But a satisfactory job nonetheless as was the case with Madhuri and Suresh Oberoi though someone like Danny Denzongpa may have been a better choice. There were some flaws but heck, nothing is perfect and this movie is a gem. Emotionally charged, eerie and gripping are all effective adjectives to convey the lore of Parinda
This is a rare, genuine Bollywood mafia movie. In fact, it was made before Bollywoodising of the Hindi film industry. The characters are disturbing and portrayed in such a manner that they haunt you long after the movie has stopped rolling. There have been many mafia/gangster movies in Bollywood, prior to and since Parinda but none capture the dynamics of the lifestyle as realistically as it. The story of brothers on either side of the law lends this movie a Deeware-esquire background to play with but the presence of Nana Patekar in a villainous role gives this movie a much darker appeal. It is horrifying and at times disgusting but at the same time it is sometimes sublime and fragile in order to emerge at the end with a message of affection.
This movie could have been bad. Really, really, bad. But thanks to a great director, a great actor (Patekar), and great performances by the usual bollywood actors, this movie is a groundbreaker in Indian Cinema. Has to be one of my favorite movies from india along with Masoom and Prahaar
