Waiting In The Dark is based on a novel by Otsuichi. It is story about an unlikely bond between a suspected murderer and a blind woman. It stars Rena Tenaka and Wilson Chen together with Igawa Haruka, Miyaji Mao and Sato Koichi. It was written and directed by Tengan Daisuke.Waiting In The Dark tells the story of Michiru and Akihiro and the unlikely bond that they form.Michiru is a woman who lost her sight in a car accident, living with her father in a house near a train station. But her father suddenly dies and she decides to live alone. Every morning, she listens to the sound of express train passing through the station. One day, she notices the sound of the train is different from the usual one. On TV, news tells that there was a train accident which killed a man and is suspected to be a murder. And some time later, her door bell rings. A man is standing in front of her house. She can sense someone is there, but he does not answer. He succeeds in slipping in to her house without being noticed by Michiru. The man's name is Akihiro. He is the person, on TV, who is being suspected to be the murderer of the train accident that day. Akihiro, after sneaking in to her house, heads to the window where he can see the train station where the accident happened. Who is Akihiro? Is he really the murderer? Thus the thrilling and strange life of Michiru and Akihiro and their unlikely bond begins.Waiting In The Dark is combination of drama, thriller and romance that also touches socio-political themes such as the predicament of the foreigners and disabled people in the Japanese society. The movie starts very slow but it gets interesting at the latter part.Rena Tanaka steals the show in it as she was obviously talented to portray the role of the blind in Michiru realistically and express sincerely the emotional distress and complexities brought by her condition sincerely. She carried the film from beginning to end.Despite of the slow development of the story and some parts of the plot maybe felt contrived and manipulated, the performance of the talented Japanese actress Rena Tanaka is one reason why this one is highly recommended for viewing.

Director Daisuke Tengan is Imamura's son, but this film stylistically hearkens more to the noirish atmospherics of Kiyoshi Kurosawa's "Cure" and "Charisma," if not to the intensity of their horror. Tengan, who also wrote the screenplay, collaborated on the screenplay for Takashi Miike's "Audition." Structurally, this film is almost the inverse of "Audition," emerging from shadow into light. To say more than that would be a spoiler. Others have mentioned the acting of the two leads. I'd like to mention the three better-known character actors who had smaller roles but gave them the fully lived-in performances they are known for: Ittoku Kishibe, Koichi Sato and Shirô Sano. Their work in this film epitomizes what I think are the best qualities of Japanese actors: versatility and egolessness. Even many of the biggest stars are like this: not attached to their image and teamwork oriented.

A killer finds shelter in the home of a blind woman without her knowledge. The character development is very good and the suspense sequences are great. Dialogue is minimal, thus being utilized only when necessary. Camera-work is excellent (especially the train station sequences), silence is ubiquitous, and the use of sunlight is astonishing. The script is structured in such a way that apparently insignificant events become more important as the film progresses, which provides for some very clever plot developments. Deliberately-paced but always engaging, this is a very quiet, rare gem that fulfills its potential in contributing a unique, satisfying experience."Waiting In the Dark" can best be described as a hybrid between art-house and mainstream cinema. The first hour almost exclusively plays to the art-house crowd, employing a very slow tempo as it showcases the everyday lives of the two lead characters. The plights of the blind girl are very enjoyable to watch because they are executed in interesting ways. For example, her yearning to reunite with her mother are played out through projected images of what she always dreamed her mother would wear in terms of clothing, even when a particular situation calls for something completely different. In like manner, her fear of venturing alone into the outside world is exceptionally portrayed through similar means. The workplace persecution of the male lead is more basic, but the situation will likely succeed in getting a slight rise out of the viewer. The latter half transitions to a more mainstream project as the relationship between the leads is fleshed out and the thriller elements are brought to a climax. One notable series of images is related to the train station sequence. There is an important event that is shown in pieces throughout the movie, and what makes this film so clever is that the event is shown from completely different camera angles. This gives the viewer a piece of the puzzle at a time until it eventually shows everything that happened. I must say, the climactic train sequence actually had my hairs standing on end. Really cool stuff. The cinematography is awesome. As mentioned earlier, the use of sunlight is sweet. The filmmakers must have chosen an emphasis on sunlight as a juxtaposition of blindness, and it works really well. One moment, in particular, has the girl standing at her door (about to venture out into the world) as the camera slowly moves in behind her until the shining sun engulfs the entirety of the screen. Absolutely gorgeous moment that I've used as my computer desktop. Now, Wilson Chen is not necessarily known for his acting prowess, but he holds his own in this film. Nothing brilliant, but a good performance. It's Rena Tanaka who steals the show with her exceptional acting ability. There's not a moment of doubt that her character is blind because her use of eye gazing and physical mannerisms are spot on. She's also one hell of a cryer – with little in terms of overzealous wailing in favor of quiet tear-rolling. I'm definitely going to watch more films with this talented actress. In conclusion, this is one of the best films of 2006, in the entire world. It's a real shame that stuff like "Akira Kurosawa's Dreams" gets 5,832 IMDb votes while this gem of a film only gets 64, even though it runs circles around "Dreams" in terms of quality film-making. That's what I call a "Total Joke" folks. Listen, if you're a fan of slow-paced dramas, you need to see this. Blind buy it if you have to. It's most definitely worth it.

A cute, blind Japanese girl has to face living on her own for the first time after the death of her father. She has a friend who comforts and helps out but generally the blind girl chooses to cut herself off from the outside world by becoming more and more reclusive. She is totally alone in her house- or at least thinks she is.It's not exactly riveting and the pace just slightly slower than it comfortably should be. That said, this is by no means a dull or vapid film and has at the core, a decent little plot even if the characterization is wanting. With topics such as murder, prejudice, disability and an unusual form of sanctuary there's enough to interest and entertain for the duration. And the ending, whilst not fireworks, at least has a satisfactory resolution.
