a film so unique, intoxicating and bizarre that it not only demands another viewing, but is also forgivable as a satirical comedy where the jokes eventually take the back seat.

This is one of the best movies I’ve seen in a very long time. You have to go and see this on the big screen.

I was magically drawn to this movie .... while surfing randomly on YouTube i happened to hear "Kesariya Baalam" song . I liked the screenplay and more over i have never seen Ayesha takiya that cute. Went onto search about the movie. Came to know that critically acclaimed Nagesh Kukunoor (i knew him before because of his kiss with Tisca chopra in his directorial venture "hyderabad blues") was the director. Just discovered that one of my favorite movies "Iqbal" which rekindled my dream of becoming a good bowler was also directed by him. I am surprised by his diversity of movies he has done.I have come here to write a good note on movie before it might die down once i get back to my normal life. But i can't stop myself praising the director.Coming to the movie.., This movie will always remain in top 1% of all good movies i have seen or might see. I will definitely recommend my dear ones to watch this. That's the kind of feeling this movie has given me. This has taken me pinnacle of emotions; Love, friendship , affection and sacrifice. As i have said , this movie has shown the meaning and value of life in just 2 hours. The story was well written so that it depicts the situations in various regions, religions aptly. It has also shown the way to lead a life .. " Like i want it to be , no matter what others say ." I will definitely take with me the lessons i learned, for the rest of my life. Writing a review is part of the plot. Whenever i feel like having the feel of movie , i will land on this page.My search for nagesh's movie is ON now.

I read the review of those that hated this movie and I found their criticism petty to say the least. I am not Indian and do not speak Hindi or Urdu, so I am judging the film based on the sub-titles; nonetheless to attack the film because Chopra should be pronounced Chop-da is worse than petty, it is irrelevant. The story is about love, how tradition is both good and bad, personal courage, the position of women in the sub-continent, how one's sense of honor is easily twisted to serve one's more base needs and desires, etc. Even if the accents aren't always correct, the translations from English to Hindi are sometimes weak, the oddity that the Indian government did not know the home address of the dead husband, etc., I say "Who cares?" One reviewer attacks the love scenes in the beginning of the film. I found them much more real and much more full of emotion and love than the typical teasing but don't touch kissing of lighter Bollywood fare, or the humping, spit swapping of Western films. This film is wonderful, reminding me a little of the great Shyam Benegal films of 35 years ago, but not quite as dark. The acting is great - those attacking Gul must have seen a different film than the one I watched; I thought both female leads were terrific and very believable. Gul may not be Meryl Streep, but she is far better in this role than 99% of the typical Bollywood "actresses." The two woman develop their characters so well, that I, and I would assume most all others watching the film, cheer for them and pray for a happy ending. The themes are very nicely woven into the film. The anguish of Shankar's father losing his "mansion" is wonderfully portrayed. While some see the falling of the rich (or powerful) as tragic, others, myself included, see it as sweet justice. The fact that he sends his newly-wed son to Saudi Arabia to earn enough money to bail out his father and thereby allow his father to get back his mansion and then lamenting more the loss of his son's income than the loss of his son is believable. Moreover, he then is willing to sell his daughter-in-law to achieve the same end, is all part of the theme that true "honor" has nothing to do with material things and that his sense of honor is tragically shallow.I can go on and discuss other themes, but the main themes that revolve around the two young women are very powerful and most satisfying. The development of the themes of love, independence, commitment, position of women, compassion, etc., are wonderfully addressed and make this film well worth watching. It is better than Devdas and most all the other Bollywood blockbusters.

A finely crafted little gem of a movie - one of the best Indian films of 2006. I firmly believe that this film could give quite a few critical acclaimed American movies from the same year, a run for their money. Director Nagesh Kukunoor was already known for presenting the most well-etched and relatable characters on screen - but with this movie he has also clearly established that he can transform a very ordinary, simple story to a most engaging, extraordinary movie experience. I do have a few complaints about the script and the dialogues, which tend to be a bit clichéd and sometimes ineffective - but other than that the technical aspects are more than satisfactory with the beautiful cinematography of the locales and the brilliantly soothing score. My Final Rating: 8.5/10.

I have read the other user comments and I am happy someone has compared it to the original by Kamal called Perumarzhakalam released in 2004.The original had a tight story and no loopholes as described above about the Indian Govt not having proper records, or even bad shoots and bloopers. The story is great and a touchy one and well described by others. But sadly Nagesh taking credit for it as his own story is a sad thing and amounts to nothing other than plagiarism.I guess he has been affected by Bollywood's so called "inspired" syndrome. He must at least give credit where it is due.I liked some of his older movies, but now I suspect if any of them were originals after all. Here is a link in IMDb for the original masterpiece. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0425350/#comment I recommend everyone to see the original, even with subtitles if needed, to know what class direction and class acting is all about.
