To me, this movie is perfection.
I wanted to like it more than I actually did... But much of the humor totally escaped me and I walked out only mildly impressed.
This is one of the few movies I've ever seen where the whole audience broke into spontaneous, loud applause a third of the way in.
The movie's neither hopeful in contrived ways, nor hopeless in different contrived ways. Somehow it manages to be wonderful
I've had great luck to read in media about the Croatian movie titled You Carry Me" and watch it in cinema in Zagreb, during my trip to Croatia. The most important is the fact, that I didn't hear the silence in the cinema after movie projection. After two and a half hours, I saw people who talked about their opinions, discuss about the movie and that was definitely a great success of the film itself. This movie brings alive three fantastic stories, which describe rarely film narrated relations between daughters and their fathers. I was delighted how those multidimensional, realistic and complex relationships were great processed in this film and how all characters are trying to find their piece of happiness and achievement, in their attempts to self-realization and understanding of the closest people around them.I assume that the casting for this movie was very demanding job, but film Director and Screenwriter Ivona Juka did the right thing with great casting and we can see a number of good actresses and actors in her film. I would point out great Croatian actresses: Natasa Janjic, Natasa Dorcic, Lana Baric, little girl Helena Beljan and her first role in the film at all. Equally, I would single out great actors, especially Croatian amateur actor Goran Hajdukovic, Slovenian actor Sebastian Cavazza and our famous Serbian actor Vojislav Brajovic in his brilliant role. I am very glad that Serbia is one of the film's co-producers.With this great casting and film story, with beautiful music, great screenplay, beautiful photography and powerful production, film director and screenwriter Ivona Juka managed to get close to us strong emotions, love and hope, the things we really needed today.
First I have to say I watched the film at Pula film festival. When they say Under the stars" it really means under the stars. I always loved watching film on the open, but Pula's Arena is gorgeous. (My fist time there, so maybe it shows a little ) The ambiance is totally great. Antient roman amphitheater, warm summer night, giant screen... Great! It is a such a great place for films. I think I found a right place for this fabulous movie. Several thousand people enyojed the film with me. Presentation was short (that is always good) and after that we just immerged into stories. I loved it, and people around me loved it. Six times!!!! the spontaneous applause boursted out. It was like the crows could not wait for the end to show their enthusisam. The atmosphere was really special. Some special vibe flew above roman theater. Eerybody found a peace for themselves. The film is great. It's strong. It holds on you. I'm really happy I was a part of that.
You carry me" is an absolute breathtaking movie with a tremendous storyline that will keep you interested all the way through. Skillfully made and written intelligent. You don't need tons of special effects to create an unique movie. The acting is great, the story is powerful and intense . Three separate life stories, each so unique, but also related with the main question trough the movie: "when will YOU change?" The film has great impact on how we think about everyday situations. At first we may judge some presented situations on the screen but the film shows us that everyone could relate to those situations. It shows us that life is not black and white and that is often unpredictable.Ivona, thank you for making this masterpiece and for raising Croatian cinematography on a higher level. I never write reviews but this time, I had to. Don't miss this movie!
I wholeheartedly recommend watching this movie, all the more considering this is the directors first featured fiction movie. Ivona Juka, the director, is also credited with the movie's screenplay, which is incidentally one of the best i've seen coming from this region. While Croatia's cinematography continues being plagued by constant motives of war and historical detail, Juka takes us away from these accustomed leit-motifs and tells us a story quite unusual for these parts. The characters don't have a classic happy end, which in my book is a particularly big plus, nor are they in any way stereotypes. These 3 female characters are unique and lifelike in their 3 separate stories.I once again strongly suggest you go see this feature, because you won't feel disappointed at all, only pleasantly surprised by the sheer brilliance of it.
