best movie i've ever seen.

Excellent and certainly provocative... If nothing else, the film is a real conversation starter.

There is no plot to this. It is a weird musician in a music studio from hell. He tries to read his music but the stand either goes way up high or settles to the floor. Never where he wants it. He plays the tuba and it gets huge in size. His piano won't stay put as he tries to play it. Then it catches fire. By the time he is done, the whole place is in utter collapse. The fun thing is that he is undeterred by failure, never stopping trying to play an instrument. Quite well done.

Luny Musician, The (1906) *** (out of 4)aka Le Maestro Do-Mi-Sol-DoIn terms of an original storyline, this Melies film doesn't contain that but it's still a lot of fun. A musician is in his room trying to learn a new song but the maid comes in and interrupts him, which causes him to fly off the handle and kick the tray out of her hands. Then the room comes to life and the musicians is about to find himself being tortured. Melies was a master at the trick film and this here shows his talents at the highest level. Even though we've seen this type of film from him before I still had a blast here as the sheet music kept moving to different levels where the musician couldn't read it and even better is when his violin turns to a tuba and then various other instruments. The highlight of the film are the last few moments when he's trying to play the piano but it starts dancing across the room and then violently attacks the musician. This isn't one of Melies best known works but it's a very good one.

This is another variation of Melies' most popular and imitated -- especially by him -- theme first expressed in L'AUBERGE MYSTERIEUSE, as a a composer or music teacher suddenly finds the instruments in his salon running amok, causing much comic havoc. These are always a pleasure to watch, especially given Melies' still uncanny ability to match positions between takes.This is one of the many previously lost or infrequently seen Melies pictures that have been made available by Serge Bromberg, David Shepherd and a myriad of other hands in the newly issued DVD set GEORGES MELIES: FIRST WIZARD OF CINEMA. Required viewing for anyone interested in the history of movies ..... and a lot of fun.
