The Diary of Lady M

She's a beautiful gifted performer, but her work is not the sort that invites popular acclaim. Despite the fact that she is unlikely to become famous, she enjoys her life as a performer who lives just outside the mainstream. Awaiting her backstage one evening is a Spanish painter who has seen her show and wants to make her acquaintance. They walk around Paris getting to know one another, and then the painter returns to Spain. Something about the man has moved Lady M to passion: she flies to meet him in Barcelona and he shows her his beloved Catalonia. This time, however, their relationship is as much about passionate lovemaking as it is about compatibility. So smitten is Lady M with her new man that when she discovers that the painter has a black wife and child, she is only a little bit taken aback and she invites his whole family to join her in Paris. Surprisingly, they do, and the number of people sharing their love and sexual appetites changes from two to three.

Too much about the plot just didn't add up, the writing was bad, some of the scenes were cringey and awkward,

The movie's not perfect, but it sticks the landing of its message. It was engaging - thrilling at times - and I personally thought it was a great time.

One of the film's great tricks is that, for a time, you think it will go down a rabbit hole of unrealistic glorification.

This is without any doubt one of the worst movies i've ever seen. I mean that in a good way. I was laughing hystericly from start to end! Unlike campy b-movies like 'astro-zombies' or 'plan 9', this one's got intentions, it is trying to tell us something. Which of course makes it even more of a tragedy. The plot is about a french nightclub singer who falls in love with a cheesy spanish guy named Bruno or something. They have sex the whole movie through, while the nightclub singer narrates about the flowers at her child home. In one incredible scene she attaches an earing in her vagina and gives us some of the most pretentious and stupid dialouge in years! Apparently the actress who played the singer also wrote this piece of s**t, so I guess she deserved every rotten tomato she got. I'm no fan of Tarriers earlier work but this has got to be the lowpoint of his entire carrier. I catched this on tv a few years ago, and i've been wanting to see it again ever since. I think it's one of those really good grade-z movies that you can watch over and over again, like 'Glen or Glenda'. And just like that movie, it got HEART. Highly recommended for grade-Z movie fans who doesn't limit themselves to american and italian cinema only.Rent it, borrow it or steal it - lady M has got to be seen. 10/10

When reading reviews of this film(few as they seem to be)the word 'pretentious' is likely to come up, maybe along with 'pompous' or possibly even 'pornographic'. As for the latter label, I wouldn't use it that casually. But I still think the concept of 'baring all' has been taken a bit too far in the name of artistic licence. The plot; female French(as far as I can tell) night club singer hooks up with soft-spoken Spanish artist and falls madly in love. But her happiness is marred by doubts - who is he really, and what is he hiding from her? Sounds truly original, doesn't it? In fact, the way it's executed, this film invites demanding viewers to smug, sarcastic remarks on a regular basis. But if you manage to stick with it till the end, there are some interesting revelations and even something resembling a plot twist.Unfortunately, the grainy look of the film and the female protagonist's voice-over narration in the form of a diary, will have a high percentage of the audience abandoning ship during the first hour. The director is a recognized one in Europe. Or was, at least. Since the fairly entertaining 'Messidor' is the single previous work of his that I've seen, I can't say for certain if 'Lady M' is a typical sample from his catalogue. To me, it seems the leading lady Mezières scripted a narcissistic showcase for herself and asked Tanner to get on board and turn on the camera without interrupting or asking too many questions.Mezières own efforts must to some degree be acknowledged as daring and she does have a stroke of personal charisma. But her attempts at passionate poetry fails because she's preoccupied with posturing. And the director lets her get away with it. Some clever editing, a shot of adrenaline and a healthy dose of humour wouldn't have hurt
