Wonderful character development!
Pretty Good
Although I seem to have had higher expectations than I thought, the movie is super entertaining.
Very good movie overall, highly recommended. Most of the negative reviews don't have any merit and are all pollitically based. Give this movie a chance at least, and it might give you a different perspective.
LAST OF THE LIVING is an ultra-cheap zombie comedy in which a group of slackers go around and bump off members of the living dead in the wake of an apocalypse. Yes, it's a cheap derivative of SHAUN OF THE DEAD, made without any of the laughs, the wit, the gore, or indeed the technical prowess of the film-makers. And this is from a guy who doesn't even particularly like SHAUN OF THE DEAD.LAST OF THE LIVING is a Kiwi film although it's a far cry from the solid genre fare that used to come out of New Zealand - Peter Jackson's BRAINDEAD being a shining example. The whole thing is so cheap it looks like it was filmed on somebody's video camera with a group of buddies (and non-actors) standing in for the fellow cast members. There's not a single funny moment throughout the lengthy running time, and by the time we reach the end I was feeling extremely frustrated at having sat through a film so lacking in originality, a film without a single thing to say or distinguish itself from anything else in the over-crowded sub-genre of film-making.
We got this film as part of a collection of low-budget horror, "Masters of Terror," and were all set to laugh at the badness. Last of the Living was a great surprise. The plot is well constructed, and the four leads are charming and engaging. I'm not quite sure how to explain this, but the main plot - zombie apocalypse, a desperate ploy to get to a centrifuge(?) is nothing we haven't seen before. It's the little things that make a difference: the characters' back stories, the detail about why there are no bullets left, the way the characters interact with each other, and the fact that the main crisis is conflict between friends, not the zombie apocalypse - all these factors make this worth a viewing. For those who like combat there are some decent fight set pieces. Plus the soundtrack is the sex bob-omb. For what it is, Last of the Living is good fun.
I recently purchased this movie in an 8 pack of low budget horror films.I like to watch independent movies to keep myself aware when good independent films surface. After watching a few from the pack I almost stopped. I powered through to this one and was pleasantly surprised. The writing and/or improvisation was great. The characters actually had some charisma and the story was great. To see people act the way normal "none Hollywood" people would act was refreshing and I think this has the potential for a cult following. So check it out if you are sick of Hollywood style fodder and just want a real zombie flick made by smart people.
Wow... So this film was so boring. I rented it because it looked like it would be up the same alley as Shawn of the Dead, but aside from zombies and jokes they are in NO way comparable. The production values were low enough to be a distraction for one. The acting was lame for two. The story was boring for three.. ugh! I spent five bucks to rent this film and I feel totally cheated. If I had ANYTHING else to do, I never would have finished it. I was happy when the credits rolled.Okay, I've ranted I feel better. So why a 3 star not a 1? It's not the worst movie I've ever seen. Also, there were on very seldom occasions a few laughs. Mostly the movie was just laughable though.DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME.
